Football Season Postmortem

What Purdy really needs to work on is having a Better Offensive Line who can block well enough so he can STEP UP INTO THE POCKET.....
He does it when he has time as well. Multiple times he missed passes last night with minimal pressure because of footwork.

Not sure how that guy is still allowed to post here honestly.

love the group think. You guys need to link your real names to these pages so the kids and families you talk **** about know who you are when you’re kissing their asses when you fanboy while meeting them.

Nowhere did I suggest fan expectations have any effect on the team. I'm sure Campbell isn't satisfied and will spend the next 9 months making sure next year is better.

What I am saying is the fan rhetoric of "hey, at least we won more than 3 games" is going to get old. It's fine for a few years, but expecting people to be satisfied with what was, by all accounts, a very "meh" year simply because it's better than where we were 10 years ago is unreasonable. At some point I think it's fair for expectations to change.

But we’re not just “winning more than 3 games” we’re going to bowl games every year and having winning conference records and winning actual road games and leading the league in some areas and have some of the best players in the league and beating OU and Texas and on and on and on. If you aren’t happy with that then you won’t be happy with anything. You’re just a doosh.

You can’t go around talking about nutcups and “we are Iowa state” and then at the same time talk about how disappointed you are with all these great things we’ve never had. I hope we stay at 7-5 forever because I’d rather have that than have this amazing fan base turn in to hokeye nation.

So when is the point expectations should change when you are building a program from the bottom up? This wasn’t a rebuild, it’s a build.

jesus this fan base.

He’s just not accepting mediocrity like the rest of them. They’re actually better fans than people who actually support the teams and athletes, because they find mediocrity unacceptable.

It really speaks to a higher level of fandom because they expect mediocrity won’t be accepted. So calling players and coaches names while hiding their own identities is like the main act of mediocrity not being acceptable

Completely average team with average results.

When you consider offensive penalties and special teams play alone, you have all the proof you need. 9 or 10 win teams do not look like that. And still, just one or two more bounces of the ball in ISU's direction and they probably get there somehow.

2020 will be the chance for everyone in the program to prove that this year was nothing more than a missed opportunity.

I love Campbell and what he’s done here. With that said, without Purdy these last two years we're most likely ready to run him out of town...
Honestly, I think you can say that about a lot of coaches and a lot of programs. It's kind a of a false narrative.

Plus, he brought Purdy and he played him, so he's not worth running out of town?

AND, who knew Purdy was Purdy before he played?

A fine season that should have been so much better. Feel like that's the perfect way to sum it up.

This was 2005 all over again

The Big 12 wasn't a juggernaut this year, but definitely a step up in competition than what the 2005 squad faced. Not hitting at least 8 or 9 wins is somewhat disappointing though for me.

That sentiment projected by ISU fans signals what has been built here with the program when ISU plays everyone in the Big 12 and a 7-5 record has a lot of fans in 'meh mode".

Considering that Purdy didn't suffer the sophomore slump, I'm really enthused to see what he can do next year. Really excited about the defensive back half at LB/DBs in 2020. I'm really curious to see if anything changes with Lima graduating. Will ISU stay in a 3 man front? I'm ready to move on from this year, and get into the next with a positive outlook.

It isn’t reasonable to state an uncomfortable truth?

Guess what? Purdy is on the team therefore Campbell isn’t on the hot seat.

Maybe, just maybe this can be seen as a compliment to both Purdy and Campbell for recognizing his talents...

I'm going to give you the benefit of the doubt on this one. Your obtuse way of complimenting both the coach and the player required too much processing time by the individuals reading a board like this, so they went to the more straight ahead assumption that you were criticising the coach. I was one of them, I'll take more time to process in the future. Still think it's a false narrative though.

Overall 7-5 is great.

This was one of the softest Big12 conferences in a long time. There will only be 2 ranked teams to close the regular season. Someone brought up the 05 team - I agree. And that year the Big 12 had 4 teams end up in the final AP Poll.

If there was a year to hit 10 wins, this would have been it. Missed opportunity but still a great year.

I don't agree with your grades completely but special teams was clearly not a strength of this team. I think you have a very valid point here.

FG kicking had its up and down but was probably about average when compared around the nation. Punting sure seemed to be a detriment this year. I would liked to have seen more punt returns.

Question for coaches here. ISU and many other teams tend to give a free release to many of the other teams players when they punt to ISU. What is the purpose for this in terms of setting up a punt? I see a lot of players don't really try to block at the line of scrimmage, but moreso try to funnel them a certain way once the ball is punted.

It’s a bit of both. Purdy is a transformational player, and wouldn’t be here without Campbell. I don’t think that we’re used to having those; our last one was probably Seneca Wallace.

Please don’t take criticism as an all or nothing deal. I think it’s fair the staff deserves some criticism this season and especially this game. That doesn’t mean I think they’re bad or want them run out of town.

The only consistencies this year were the mistakes, be it special team gaffes and line penalties. Several teams you can brute force through them (Kansas, West Virginia, etc.) and win. But against fundamentally sound teams (Iowa and KSU), those mistakes will kill you. The coaching staff is smart...it's not like they want to lose games. Look for continued growth and improvement.

No problem really.

People know the difference between valid criticism and an emotional hissy fit. Most of those people have slunk back their holes this morning after sleeping on it. I don't have a problem wading through it immediately after a loss but the idea that there's adults who handle adversity that way sticks with me afterward.

This season was disappointing for sure but lets not forget the Texas and UNI games. This team could have just as easily been 5-7 as it could have been 9-3.

They just arent doing the little things well that win close football games. I never really bought into the hype this year anyways, they lost two of the best players in school history from an 8-5 team. People seem to forget the K-State game last year, we needed a miracle comeback to pull out a win against an inferior team in Ames.
