I am talking about to friends and co workers that say early games do not matter
Did you guys know Ryan used to make the student cheer sheets at every UNI home basketball game? These early non conference games do matter.
Wins can help you. Stess, "can". Losses don't hurt you. I mean, look at Iowa. How many years have they beaten a highly ranked team in Nov/Dec, only to suck in Feb and not get in the Dance? Several. The answer is several, or a lot.
They matter only insomuch as the team can sustain success.

I don't think anyone ever said they don't matter so long that there's not a bunch of bad losses.
But we all know the most important to Hawk fans is usually the first week or two of December when Fran gets has his thugball reach epic heights.
