Hilton renovations going before the BoR next week

What do you receive besides your program of study...?
I ended up with an LAS degree but my mathematics, science, social sciences and even the work I did with ISU Theater has helped me in several jobs I have had since graduation as just a small example. This includes my current career. I received a balanced education at Iowa State not just a technical certification.

These are kind of vague.

I would imagine many of these things you could have learned while working and/or what you do practically has only incidental similarity to your academic coursework.

Our education system is a pretty expensive way to teach these sorts of general skills.

I would make something of the same description of my own education, too -- I ultimately learned more practical skills from extracurricular activities than classes.

My description of them is admittedly (and intentionally) vague. The knowledge and skills gained are not. If you want to go to a technical school go to a technical school. If you want to get a well rounded education that will serve you throughout life go to a university. When I went to school I couldn't imagine the turns my life would take. Luckily my well rounded education has served me well throughout.

I'm not Velo, but I'll answer: I got a husband. And a realization that learning to deal with others, including faculty not from my major, could be a pain at the time and really helpful when I got out in the real world.

Finding a spouse and, summarizing your description, learning how to deal with others as an adult are not things one needs to go to college to learn how to actually do.

Plenty of ways to do that while getting paid instead of forking over 5- or 6-figures. I would argue the true cost is even higher when you count lost work time and experience.

There is not much of an argument if all you have are vague points about learning maturity that naturally comes to anybody aged 18 to 25, especially if they are working.

You would have matured and figured out most of the same stuff at the same ages if you were not in school and working instead, and you probably would have been dating, too.

I directly answered your specific question:
"What do you receive besides your program of study...?"

Stop throwing other "but, but, but" anytime you get a reply you don't like.

What are you talking about...? I love your reply.

It makes my point for me -- nothing you got from college required college. None of it had anything really to do with the core of your academic experience and program content.

My response is more of a yes yes yes than a but but but. :)

Well, this thread has been painful to read.

I'm glad someone from Washington DC, who's visual representation of themselves on a college athletics forum is 'Dr Who', can manage to volunteer so much of their day to preach on the virtues of not spending public money on educating said public... on a forum based around a public education institution
