Had to include this:

and the guy that doesn't get enough air-time:

I've become a bigger fan of Ray Charles over the years. I listen to the Beatles channel on XM a lot and of all the "influences" they play he's my favorite. Guy could sing and play anything and make it emotional or fun.

A song that I would be surprised ANYone would remember: "You Can't Go Back Home" by Sylvia. The album was Just Sylvia, the same one that produced the mega-hit, "Nobody," in 1982. It was never a single, but a very strong album cut, imo.

Another track from the same album applies to this thread also: "The Mill Song."

anybody else find a song or two that they were going to post and then double checked the lyrics to learn they really weren't all that PC?

I can't think of any off the top of my head, but now you have me curious. :)

I'm probably overly cautious, but I found a David Bowie video that really gave the impression that it was recorded about the time Archie Bunker was on All in the Family. I couldn't help but cringe and think "you probably shouldn't phrase it that way".

Putting a little twist on the category. Song about being homesick.

Simon and Garfunkel: Homeward Bound

Motley Crue: Home Sweet Home

Atlanta Rhythm Section: Homesick

Who would have guessed ARS rocked harder than the Crue in this category?

traipsing thru the treetops
The Salvation Army band played
And the children drank lemonade
And the morning lasted all day, all day
And through an open window came
Like Sinatra in a younger day
Pushing the town away, oh

Ah hey ma ma mommy doo-din-nie-ya
Ah hey ma ma ma hey-y-yah
Life in a northern town
Ah hey ma ma ma ma

They sat on the stoney ground
And he took a cigarette out
And everyone else came down to listen
He said in winter 1963
It felt like the world would freeze
With John F. Kennedy
And The Beatles

There is a country version of that song (I know...blasphemy!), with Sugarland, Jake Owen and Little Big Town. When they get to the heyy ah mama part at the end I always find myself singing along & (if I'm somewhere where I can) dancing away. :D
