NFL: 2018 Cyclones in NFL training camps

I hadn't seen much from the Jags - I think that their practices are closed now - but I see that on Sunday, Lazard caught a red zone TD in a scrimmage OVER a DB. That is highlighting your strengths, AL. Here's a blurb:

*Third-team Tanner Lee had a strong day, finding rookie wide receiver Allen Lazard for a 20-yard touchdown over cornerback Jalen Myrick in early red-zone work.

Jomal Wiltz recorded 4 tackles - 3 solo - for the Patriots in their pre-season win over the Eagles. I imagine he's a long-shot to make the 53-man roster.

Not great news for Lanning. In an article today about the various position battles in the Cowboys camp, former NFL personnel director/scout/draft analyst, Bryan Broaddus, wrote that he thinks the Cowboys will keep 6 linebackers. If they do go with 7, Justin March-Lillard is that guy. So Lanning hasn't turned any heads yet and is still facing an uphill battle to make the team.

Not good, but there's such a huge shuffle of players around the league on cutdown days that even if he doesn't make it on Dallas' active roster someone else will pick him up or he'll land on a practice squad.
That's how it goes for undrafted free agents. A lot of these guys have a cup of coffee with a handful of teams before they stick somewhere.

I'm a Dallas fan! I can't have him going to the Giants or Skins or Eagles (or Patriots) and then have to hate him! :)

Given his short amount of time at LB, his best-case scenario for this year might be a practice squad. I assume that some team would be interested in him, given his versatility and FB IQ.

Dang. Not much good news for Cyclones in the NFL:

The Raiders claimed defensive tackle Gabe Wrightoff of waivers Wednesday and an injury to another member of the team opened the door for his arrival.

Oakland announced that veteran defensive tackle Ahtyba Rubin has been placed on injured reserve. Michael Gehlken of the Las Vegas Review-Journalreports that Rubin tore his biceps during one of last week’s joint practices with the Lions.

Rubin signed with the Raiders in June and was set for his 12th NFL season. Rubin split last season between the Falcons and Broncos and also played with the Seahawks and Browns during his first 11 years in the league.

I don’t think Lanning saw the field on defense during tonight’s Cowboys game versus the Cincinnati Bengals. Campos played at least a quarter, first right tackle and then left tackle. I think he looked a little better, though he still wiffed on a couple of blocks and was called for holding twice on one drive. There was one extended segment where the Dallas announcers talked about him and his background. Even Cowboys lineman legend, Nate Newton, brought him up as a guy that was in the mix at the tail end of the roster but who needs a lot of work.

The Colts just cut a LB but Jeremiah George is listed as a 3rd-teamer on this depth chart:

Does anyone have a sense of how likely he is to stick on the Colts' roster?

50/50. Based on snap counts it looks like they're going with a youth movement at LB so if he sticks it'll have to be a special teams contributor. Most roster projections have them keeping six linebackers on the active roster and there are nine guys vying for those six spots. Four are pretty much locks - Skai Moore, Najee Goode, Darius Leonard, and Anthony Walker. Beyond that it's all very fluid.

Leonard has quietly had a really solid career. Loved watching him play at ISU and glad to see he has had some success, in somewhat of a journeyman career.
I wouldn't have bet that he'd have a better chance to make a roster than J. George and A. Lazard but that's how it stands. He must've kept himself in good shape.
