Update: Disney+ will launch Nov 12. Cost for subscription is $6.99/mo or $69.99/year. Disney’s entire “signature collection” will be available at launch (Cinderella, Little Mermaid, Beauty & the Beast, etc) will be available at launch. New Star Wars series “The Mandalorian” will also be available at launch.
The Pixar library of films will be available within the first year.

Pretty big news that Disney is going with their own streaming service, rather than buy Netflix as had been rumored. This will be the end of Disney TV shows as well as Disney & Pixar films being available on Netflix (includes Star Wars and the MCU).

They also plan to start an ESPN streaming service with a vague launch date early next year. That's a little weird since they already own ESPN, so maybe Watch ESPN is getting rebranded yet again?

Disney and Pixar titles will be removed from Netflix, with this new service serving as the home for all Disney movies going forward. The service's initial lineup will include Toy Story 4, Frozen 2 and the live-action adaptation of The Lion King.

Disney will also invest in exclusive TV shows and movies for its new streaming platform.

Additionally, early next year, the company will launch its own ESPN streaming service that will feature video content from the MLB, NHL, MLS and more.

I think this streaming thing is going to get annoying and more costly very quickly. There will be standalone apps and streaming services from the major networks and we the consumer will end up having to subscribe to each individualy.

I can see Disney/ESPN and others leaving certain programming for their own offerings, only making partial content available to other services and/or making PPV common for the bigger TV events.

I already find it annoying searching through my Prime, Vue and Netflix accounts to see if a certain show or movie is offered for free on demand or paid rental.

I agree, I could see this streaming thing getting very annoying very quickly. Everyone will soon have their own service that you need to pay $10 a month for. Universal Pictures will have their own, Sony Pictures will have their own, etc, etc. Then Netflix would go belly up because they wouldn't be allowed to show anyone's movies or TV shows anymore once they all have their own service.

Maybe this will all be good for the country eventually when nobody has TV anymore and we'll all be forced to go outside again and actually have a real life.

Disney has tried and failed on multiple occasions to get a digital "locker" or "service" up and going. I for one will NOT be subscribing to any additional services like this. I'm getting tired of every company up and making a new subscription service... and most of them are horrible (either UI or actual streaming quality). Leave it to the "pros" at netflix (and to a much lesser extent, hulu) to handle the streaming. Even amazon, a company with a crap ton of resources, can't create a competent user experience to rival netflx.

I disagree. The Disney/ESPN's of the world can't afford to just cut their ties with the streaming platforms like Vue. think of the viewers they have lost by customers that have already dumped cable. They can't even come close to making that up by isolating their programming to just their own streaming platform.

Agreed.

These companies need to realize that services like netflix are the big reason there's not the level of piracy there was prior to netflix. They offered a great service that was reasonably priced and was easier than pirating, or at least easy enough that it made it hard to justify the extra work.

If you start making it difficult by making people subscribe to a dozen different streaming services and having to check every single one of them any time they want to sit down and watch something, theyre just going to go and pirate it.

I agree. However, I think as these networks start to segregate their programming, they'll find out it's not worth it. I don't think consumers are going to spread their money across Netflix, CBS, ESPN, Disney, NBC, etc. Consumers may do 2-3 streaming services.

I agree to a certain extent with this. I think they will end up offering more PPV events or special channels that are limited to their own streaming package to get another 5 dollars here or another 10 dollars there. They will find a way to make up their money from people cutting the cord.

The only thing Disney has that I'd be interested in watching is the Star Wars movies and the ESPN networks, and that's it. Most of their own movies are garbage.

As a father of a 6 and 4 year old no doubt we'll sign up. I might dump Netflix as mostly only the kids watch it.

Netflix should have swallowed their pride and accepted the disney sale.

We usually end up buying the disney movies my kids like (so they can watch them in the car). They all come with digital copies these days. The only reason we watch any disney movies on netflix is out of convenience... I think disney over-estimates how many people will stream the movies if they have to go to another (and pay for another) streaming site. I would argue most stream them on netflix like i do, only out of convenience. I will just load up the digital copy instead for my kids to watch.

I don't want disney anywhere near my netflix. Almost all disney streaming content is a complete mess (and I'm including the abomination that is the watch espn user interface). Disney should just keep taking the money netflix gives them and consider it extra income ;)

Someone doesn't have little kids.
This.
Also, people are correct streaming services are going to get to a saturation point, but you can bet that Disney will be one of the ones that will be built to last. Think of the properties that they control: ABC, ESPN, Pixar, Star Wars, Marvel, Disney studios. They've got tons and tons of high demand content, and the financial resources to deliver them with quality.
A Disney streaming service will take off like a rocket.

Disney also isn't hampered with $20 billion in debt like Netflix. Disney also already has their original programming pipeline in place.

Im not sure netflix is sustainable as a standalone company.

And I'm really the exact opposite with the movies. I don't remember the last time we bought a physical copy of a movie and only like 1 or 2 digital copies through Amazon ever. They are still in that 15 dollar range and a good chunk of the physical copies we used to buy only get watched once or twice. There have been enough movies on the streaming sites, especially with Disney on Netflix, to cover the 4 or 5 hours a week my son is watching TV. I started to try and put the digital copies or our older BluRays on his tablet but he hasn't turned that thing on in months.

I think we'd actually ditch Netflix for Disney assuming the price was outrageous. I'll gladly pay 10 bucks a month for a wide selection instead of 30+ bucks on movies that have to be watched over and over.

The fact you just can't pay for the watch ESPN app and have to have a subscription to cable or internet provider baffles me. I would pay for it and drop to just basic cable
