There's constructive criticism, and there's complaining. I have no problem with the former - if you don't get honest feedback, you don't know what needs fixing.

But then there are students that complain about tests despite skipping 1/2 the classes, or who tend to write five sentences for a lab report and then whine about the low grades they receive. And those types tend to be the loudest. :)

Are you sure? I've had those students, and never hear from them. Those folks know the deal.

While looking at fb this morning before washing some dishes there was a post about tick larva and how small they are and pictures of an affected girl..... Good to look out for, but now I want to keep Z off grass.

I've had a LOT of undergrads working for me over the years, and have worked with a lot of grad students. I've generally heard more complaints about classes/faculty/TA's than praise.

The comment about the lab reports stems from lab partners that I had as a "non-traditional" student taking O Chem & other classes with lab components. I don't know if they follow through on the complaints with the course evals, so you have me there...I'm probably extrapolating where it may not be accurate. :)

You hang around a long time, you hear some things. :)
I have no idea what it's like in Erik's department and I'm not sure how this devolved, but if I offended I am sorry.

You identified the social norm. Usually, students would complain about teachers, and teachers just never shut up complaining about students. It's just like bosses and employees, and anything else like that.

The trick is to leave it as that and avoid taking it very seriously. Most of the time, it's either someone blowing off steam, trying to fit in, or someone who just sucks at what they do and isn't about to get any better.

It's a sad deal. I have a very select few people I actually talk to about teaching, because I'm not really living in the same world as the complainers, and our interactions will always end in an angry outburst of bitterness from them.

My kids always check the RateMyProf type sites before signing up for classes. Sometimes they are accurate, sometimes they are not, sometimes they are hilarious. And sometimes despite research telling them someone is a terrible prof, they have no choice but to take that section and find out it is true. Son knew both from that and word of mouth that one prof was awful and paid the extra money to take the class online from a different prof. Whichever site also has a hotness rating for the prof cracks me up.

I kept my maiden name when we got married. Some people just insist on calling me by my husband's last name and it isn't a big deal and I don't correct them. I usually take the cars in for repair and they use my last name. My husband has had to drop one of them off the last few days and they have been calling him Mr. My Last Name. He thinks it's fun and he doesn't correct them either lol. And no, we don't hyphen the kids, they just have his last name.

We really need the football team to get back to average soon so people won't obsess so much over every basketball recruit's every movement and social media.

My wife kept hers as well. I hate it when people think she was trying to make some sort of feminist statement by doing that. She kept her name because it's two letters versus my ten. She liked having a short name and didn't feel like going through the hassle of changing it. I have never cared once about it.

My parents are pretty old fashioned and will still address things to her treating her last name like a middle name and then tacking on mine at the end. It's kinda disrespectful to my wife IMO, but she tells me it's not worth it to make a big deal about it.
