Can Redemption

Those machines were the worst part of my job at Hy-Vee as a teenager. I'd be doing my thing at the customer service counter, selling a hundred scratch offs to the weirdos that thought they had it all figured out (and scratched their tickets AT the counter), and all of the sudden I would heard that god-awful beep coming from the can room. Either the machine was jammed or it was full, or both. Either was I was getting dirty. Half the time the full bags would get a hole, so I would end up carrying a giant plastic bag to the back of the store while its disgusting, smelly contents leaked down my sleeve or pant leg. Afterwards, I would do my best to sanitize and proceed to go back to handling peoples' groceries and money.

Also, these machines didn't differentiate between or reject cans/bottles that contained chew spit, cigarette butts, and/or used condoms.

I give them all to the cub scouts that come around a few times a year on can drives. They probably make $50 from me.

I used to live in south dakota and they don't have a can deposit. Have they thought of doing away with the can deposit in iowa? Most garbage providers sort garbage anyways. Just seems like a huge waste of time now a days.
At this point I would donate them to save myself the headache.
What does everyone else do with them and is there a place in the ames area to donate cans?

The redemption center is fine as long as you don't try and go Saturday morning or lunch time on a weekday. I can tell there are less redemption centers though, a bar 40 miles away brings their stuff to our redemption center, and those poor women, when they are sorting the stuff from the bar, it is completely gross.

I thought distributors had to pick up cans from bars.

These 3 things would be things i'd be fine with.

If that were all that were coming out of the statehouse, i might agree.
 
If the dumb##### in the legislature do this, we should drive by the capitol building and start a can pile.
 
I haven't noticed a big can problem in states in the midwest without can redemption. Is this still a problem? Do people really throw cans in the ditch like the 70's?

Minnesota, Nebraska, Missouri, Wisconsin, etc don't have can redemption. Is this a problem?

Growing up in Illinois, I was always taught to recycle, and did. So long as the resources are available to do this, like having recycling in public places to recycle, then I don't think it will be a problem. You will still have idiots who do not recycle, but I think most people will.

I actually found the redemption thing a pain and just threw my recyclables in to the normal trash.

My bad, I totally did.I have a feeling the first year everyone would be shooting them off and a lot of injuries. Then after the first year hype, 80% of the people would never shoot them off again.

That's pretty much what I'd expect as well. And that's not necessarily a bad thing.

I think they should raise it to 10 cents, you won't believe the garbage that will be laying around if they get rid of it. Bad enough the way it is now.

When you say garbage, I assume you mean cans? Or are you saying people will just start polluting everywhere/everything once this can redemption law goes away?

Part of the bill is to create recycling programs.
From what I understand, in towns like Ames that have single stream garbage recycling is not an issue. But for small towns most everything goes right to the landfill. That is why we still have the can deposit. Once proper recycling programs can be established for all towns. Then it is good for all to get rid of the deposit.

What do you call small towns? Every town up here and even rural residence has waste management recycling containers
 
I put mine in a bin in my garage until it gets too full then take them to Hy-Vee and usually get about $10-15 from them. If you have ones that the machine won't read just take them to the customer service desk and tell them how many and I've never had them question them and just add it to my total.
 
I'd be so happy for this stupid law to go away.

If it's so great at increasing recycling, and reducing trash in ditches, why don't they put deposits on McDonald's bags or water bottles?

I shouldn't say that out loud, or they might actually do it.
