Conference Prediction for ISU

I get that some don't think they will do well but after taking a step back and looking at it. They have a whole bunch of guys playing together for the first time. They worked a ton on defense and improved and only lost to Gonzaga be a few points and if one more shot or free throw falls against Cinci they would have won that game. The Iowa game was a mess but that happens sometimes. They have started moving the ball better on offense and have had better shot selection. This team has good leaders on it and I think some of these big 12 teams are paper tigers. They haven't really beaten anybody and you will see that once the conference games start.
Naz, Morris, Thomas, and Burton have all played together before and Babb has been on the scout team. We have more returning faces this year than we do new pieces in our rotation.

I'll buy 10-8, maybe better if someone emerges to give the post a boost or if someone like Weiler Babb really finds a niche.

The absences of Niang and McKay been highly touted but it's lost that Nader was also a tough match up.

I was at first disappointed in how a team with 6 seniors isn't better, but this is a different 6 seniors than what you'd normally find, and without much versatility among the group it's an overblown concept.

Can't say I fully expect 10-8 but that may make the games easier to watch if they surprise me with a win over KU or Baylor or something.

8-10 ... They have the firepower to beat anybody. A lack of consistency will be their undoing.

Crazy prediction - They will have late leads over KU, Baylor and others, but poor free throw shooting and decision making will result in gut wrenching losses.

I don't see us beating b12 teams unless burton has a good game and goes for 20. i think he can do that 8 out of 18 times, so that gets us 8 wins.

Why does Steve Prohm calls timeouts when the team starts to play well? We would struggle for like 2-3 minutes, turn the ball over or something crazy and he won't do anything. The moment the team gets into a rhythm and starts to score, then he calls a timeout. I swear last night I told my wife when that was going to happen and it did. I don't understand that. Those smart enough to know whats going there, any opinion as to why he does that?

I have noticed this as well. I find it odd.

No clue. The only thing I can think of is to get something set for the next couple of plays to try to consolidate a run but that's not how I would do things.

I am talking about playing on the floor together. It takes time to build on court chemistry. It is why you see teams like the Heat when Lebron joined or when he joined the Cavs that there are ups and downs. Thomas never really played along side Long before, let alone with Morris and Long at the same time. Burton and Long never played together and Burton was a bench player last year, and never played with Long. Then you have Babb, Young, Bowie, Jackson and Holden all playing at this level for the first time and with the other guys for the first time and/or learning a new system.

Do you think people are being unfair? 10-8 to 8-10 is what this team has shown so far. You being optimistic doesn't suddenly make everyone who doesn't agree with you pessimistic.

Lot of picks for sub 500 finish. That just surprises me.

Saw in the game thread last night that a theory was Prohm calling time out to keep things positive once something happens. It seems like he let's things bleed a bit too when it's not going well.

I really have never seen someone call them in that way.

yes, and loss by 2 to a top ten team, 1 to a top 25 team and on the road in a rivalry game where anything can happen. good grief people. the sky isn't falling yet.

I watched Iowa a bit last night. I don't think ISU is as talented as many think they are, but a win there shouldn't have been that hard with some basic basketball.

Swept by: Kansas, WVU, Baylor

Sweep: Texas Tech, Texas, maybe Kansas State

Split with everyone else. @TCU will be our annual WTF loss. @OU will be our surprise win.

So 9-9 or 8-10 if my math is right.

4 home losses in one year at Hilton. Interesting

8-10 best case scenario at this point. 9 and 9 if we're lucky.
Best case scenario? Do you know what that means? Obviously not if you think luck could get it to 9-9. Good grief.

I hope if/when we win 10 that you'll come back & just say you were flat wrong. None of that 'well, at THAT time that's what it looked like' crap. I'll predict 10-8 FTR.

Loss of Nader is way more impactful than McKay. Junior year McKay would've been a big loss. Last year Nader is who made ISU a good team in transition.
I expected a smoother transition into new roles based on the amount of experience the team has. However, when Georges was on the bench last year our offense was not good. It's going to take a while. Roles are different, and unlike last year we don't have anybody on the team that is pretty much automatic to play a great game like Georges was. This year we have a bunch of guys that have been good, but have never been relied on to carry the team. We could afford to have off games from a couple rotation guys and still win.
I think there will still be a rough patch in conference but expect the team to be playing its best the last half of the conference season.
