I'll back you on this. Although part of it is when I first saw it, I was pretty burned out with Chevy Chase. There was SNL, then the original Vacation(much better IMO), Spies Like Us, Caddyshack, Fletch, Three Amigos, Funny Farm.

I didn't hate the movie by any means, but I always thought it got a little too much love. There were some great lines, but Chevy's delivery had worn on me a bit.

He's pretty overrated, and doesn't belong in the same category as some of the other "greats" of his era, who he seems to always get lumped in with.

Jeez, a lot of unexpected bagging on Christmas Vacation. Well, I guess I should have expected it. "It's a wonderful life" is good, but have you read about the copyright quirk with it? Basically it was cheap or free or whatever, so it was basically just played and played until it became a classic because everyone had seen it. I'm too lazy to look it up now. It's a good movie, but if you would pick Jimmy Stewart over Randy Quaid, you're nuts.

Saw a terrible slasher movie called 'To All a Good Night' the other day on Comet.

Not a good movie but I guess it brought out the Christmas-like nostalgia in reminding me of how the talk of all of the goofy slasher movies were such a rage in the 80's.

It's a Wonderful Life might be the best and it's at its best in black and white.

Why nothing on best Xmas SNL skits like Mr. Robinson's 'X-scape'?

Have you seen Randy Quaid lately? Dead for 20 years, Jimmy Stewart might be doing better than him, right now.

It's not that Christmas Vacation is an awful movie. It's just overrated. It's not nearly as good as folks would have you believe.

Overall or just in these particular movies? Overall...yikes.

It's a Wonderful Life is a very good movie that happens during XMas.

Christmas Vacation is classic but is basically a series of Xmas skits put together.

Yes, Randy is literally crazy. That has no bearing on whether a movie is good or not. I don't know why you would use that as a basis. I don't think it's overrated at all. We watch it every year and still enjoy it. I watch It's a wonderful life every 5 years or so. I think that movie is overrated.

BTW, I'm not really mad about this discussion, I'm just trying to combat your film snobbery ;).

It's mostly just tongue in cheek. I think Randy is great in Christmas Vacation. Just fantastic. But Jimmy Stewart is way better overall. The Man who shot liberty valance is awesome.

It still amuses me that Gremlins was originally marketed as a kid's movie.

You'll get no argument from me on It's a Wonderful Life. Nostalgia glosses over a lot. That's basically the biggest thing both IAWL and Christmas Vacation have going for them.

This is my favorite Christmas movie of all time.

It's a Wonderful Life is probably the best Christmas-spirit story, Elf is best for kids, and Love Actually is best ensemble performance. But Scrooged is just amazing.

I also am sort of meh on Christmas Vacation. It's not awful, but it is sort of like Caddyshack and Blues Brothers in my opinion - they are both mildly funny and have some great one-liners, but nostalgia has made them bigger than they actually are.

Dang Angie to cut on the Blues Brothers, car crashes, song and dance numbers," the penguin" at the orphanage, Rawhide at the country bar. You've got harsh standards for your movies. I'm afraid to ask your opinion on Animal House.

Agreed...the scene with Eddie in the living room where he breaks the ornaments is always great.

Wait. What?

Christmas Vacation is one of the few comedy movies that I can watch over and over again and it'll still make me chuckle.

"Would you like to say grace?"
"Grace? She died thirty years ago!"
"No, the BLESSING!"
".......I pledge allegiance, to the flag..."

I know, I just don't find it as hilarious as so many do. It's been years since I've seen it, but it was just not my favorite. I can't really pinpoint it, I just felt like it was sort of contrived, but not in a way that contributes to the story.

Like, to me, Airplane! or This Is Spinal Tap are two of the best comedies ever. Both are silly, and both are contrived - but the silliness is the point of the humor, and the jokes are more clever. I just don't get "clever" from Blues Brothers. I like clever, so I've had a hard time over the years with dumb comedies.

I've actually never seen Animal House!

I firmly disagree on IAWL. I never even saw it for the first time until I was about 22, so it's certainly not nostalgia for me. It's a story of the loss of hope, and then redemption through the spirit of love and kindness at Christmas. That's the essence of the holiday season (even to those who are not religious) to me.

"The s***ter's full," while hilarious, is not.

How the Grinch Stole Christmas. I can quote like 90% of it. Watched it the other day, probably watch it again before Christmas day.

Haha, I can take a quote out of IAWL that's not Christmassy too. There are plenty of quotes in CV that are more Christmassy than pretty much anything cousin Eddie says...
