State HS Tourney

Yeah, I didn't care for Gremmel's antics at all, but he is just a high school kid, so you have to cut him some slack for being a bit immature IMO. Hopefully he'll grow up and become more mature at ISU.

Did anyone watch that Max Lyon from Western Dubuque? Does he have any offers yet? He's a stud.

Just disappointing that Gremmel's coach doesn't nip that behavior in the bud early on and now it's coming to us without being remedied. That's all I'll say about Gremmel since I don't have many nice things to say about him. He's very good and he's an ISU signee so I'll pipe down. I shouldn't have said anything in the first place.

Lyon is awesome, pinned 3 kids and tech falled another. Him, Teske, and Zachary impressed me the most in 3A as far as dominant state champs.

Also, the 220 match was one of the coolest matches of the weekend and probably the biggest upset I've seen since I've been going to the state tournament.

Alex Thomsen is a FREAK. He'll obviously be recruited by everybody in the country.

I hadn't known about Zachary from Dowling before the tournament, but was very impressed with him. He's very athletic, and explosive. Teach him to be solid on top, and he could be very good at the next level.

Also, think we have any shot with that sophomore from Iowa City West? Brands I think is his name....

Thomsen must be something. West is salty and the gap is getting wider.

Dunno. I actually had to check his Wikipedia page for his high school record and that's what it said about freshman eligibility.

That is what I had heard also, but steenlage earned it before gable wrestled. I will ask around. Think I know a couple of his teammates and see one fairly often.

Gable wrestled 64-66.

There was a 4x finalist who wrestled 59-62, and another from 66-69. Any freshman ineligibility rules would have been in place for an extremely narrow window. It's more likely that Siddens had his own rule about freshmen not wrestling varsity.

add'l: Don Buzzard wrestled varsity for Waterloo East as a freshman in 1961, according to a bio.

Best quote of the tourney was Coleman stating that he was trying to put on a show knowing that Happel was going for his fourth and few in the crowd would be watching his match.

Zackary dominated in his match. Teske and Coleman are also beasts.

What gets a little more odd is, I checked Siddons bio to see if it said anything, it didn't say if he did or didn't let freshmen wrestling varsity, but did mention he was a 4X qualifier. Seems odd to do it yourself, but not allow it when you coach.

You mean Zackary? They're both 145. Coleman is 170, he got a 3rd round pin. All the points Zackary gave up were him letting his guy get up so he could get another take down.

My son has a teammate that at a youth tournament, got put in a three way round robin with teske and Doolittle. He had a short day.

FWIW I've seen Leisure multiple times wearing Penn St clothing.
We really need to be talking with Alex Thompson of Underwood.
Eric Faught of Clear Lake is a Stud Freshman Not very big, done well nationally. I'd start recruiting him NOW

I wouldn't unless you're cool with recruiting violations :wink0st:

As for Leisure he hasn't done a whole lot of national tournaments and I think he has only placed in Greco Cadets back in 2014. Before the junior contact period started Iowa State was one of two schools he mentioned.

His dad usually brings isu guys up for the camps that he holds. Good way to make some inroads.

Hence the winky face. I know there are ways to create relationships, but my tongue in cheek comment was about actively recruiting a freshman.

Would be nice.to keep them.instate but sounds like they won't be.

I have heard similar to this, but it is mainly because they haven't gotten much interest from any Iowa school, which aside from Iowa, is kind of surprising.
