KU's coach search last year

there is no place for reasonable and rational facts around here. Posts like this will get you called a troll and a Hawkeye fan, even though this is absolutely true. Most people on this board think we will be able to hire whomever we want.

Yeah, everyone thinks exactly that. Numerous people have pointed out we won't be able to hire successful mid level coaches due to the their situation and the fact that there's nothing to gain.

If Kansas is the worst FBS team, we are second worst. We enjoy playing to the level of our opponents and shooting ourselves repeatedly in the foot. I won't be shocked at either outcome next weekend. Plus they beat us last year...and mangino is garbage.

Beaty's pay is really shocking. Mangino worked his way up to 2 million and some change after the Orange Bowl. Definitely warranted for his results IMO. Gill struts in and gets a comparable or slightly better salary than Mangino, which made no sense to me. From there the precedent was set on what they were willing to pay for a HC. CW rolls in and receives at least a quarter million more than Gill.

Going back to the 60's KU is good for about 1 season of 8-10 wins every decade. Mangino is the only coach to take KU to consecutive bowl games. The way they threw money around leads me to believe they were a little out of touch. Perhaps the recent Mangino success had changed their perception of the KU football program, as if it had turned some sort of corner and those results could be attained easier than before.

The team they beat last year was a skeleton crew on defense compared to what will be on the field next Saturday. That has absolutely no bearing on the equation. Rhoads also killed any shot we had at beating KU, when he left Sam in late vs OU, only to get hurt.

I will be completely shocked if ISU loses next week. ISU should win the game by between 14-21 points at minimum. Its sucks that ISU 1-2, but besides not living up to potential in some horrid ways, ISU still competed all game against Iowa and Toledo. Ku hasn't shown the ability to even do that, let alone be in a position to win a game outside of playing a mediocre FCS program.

Agreed. And this goes back the last couple years. There have been a lot of games we have been in but didn't have the mental toughness to get the wins. If we won those games, there would be no "fire CPR" threads because we would have won our 6 games and made a bowl game. But that's not how it played out unfortunately. My point is that we have a much better team than people give us credit for. The talent is there. KU on the other hand... they are down at the bottom of the barrel with Wyoming as far as talent goes.

Mangino didn't have a chance to bail like the last guy who won in Lawrence and ran away to Minnesota as fast as he could. The better offers mysteriously failed to materialize after the Orange Bowl win. Many thought it was his weight that did him in back then.

I mean that probably explains why other offers didn't roll in, more than him being a fatty.

Didn't mangino mistreat his players at Kansas?

He made a guy do a bunch of bear crawls across the field as punishment for something. Apparently they'd had some very hot weather, and the field turf was 100+ deg, and the player ended up getting burns on his hands. I don't think it was anything intentional (who thinks about the temperature of the field?) and I remember there being some talk that the AD wanted him out due to differences of opinion on lots of things (maybe the status of the football program...).

Have U looked at Charley Weis lately? Not exactly Slim Jim, I don't think weight had anything to do with MM not moving to a better job..........

MM mistreated some KU players and also got into it with officials at a High School Football game in Lawrence...

Those were the reasons MM didn't move up but did move down

Rhoads MUST GOOOOOOOOO

I would think some of the names that popped up during the KU search would be in play if ISU is looking for a new coach. An interesting aspect of the search could be the other schools looking to find a new coach. The are a number of schools with similar stature, that ISU could be competing with.

Illinois is already in the market. Indiana is 4-0, but if they go 2-6 in Big10 play, my guess they will be looking. Purdue's head coach is only in his 3rd year, but the program is floundering and fan support isn't great. One would think their coach will get a 4th year, but in today's big money environment- it's no guarantee.

In the Big12, Rhoads is the only obvious coach on the hot seat. Strong with the Longhorns may be in trouble with their struggles and bringing in a new AD, but I think he will get a 3rd year. The wildcard could be the Wildcats, it will be interesting to see how long Snyder coaches.

It might be wise to reserve the "dumpster fire" comments about KU until after this weekend unfolds. They like us have won only 6 games since the last couple of season. They, like us have beat no one of importance during that time. We beat them in 2013...they beat us last year. This week then is the dumpster fire showdown. Make us proud coach.

In the last 29 games, ISU is 6-23. Kansas is also 6-23 over the same time span. Both teams are 1-1 against each other.

In the last 32 games, ISU is 7-25. Kansas is 6-26. The extra win for Iowa State? A win over Kansas.

What happened 33 games ago? Jake Knott's last game. Knott was apparently the only thing holding ISU football together. Even going back 35 games, ISU is only 8-27 versus 6-29 for Kansas.

Point being, both teams are complete dumpster fires. Iowa State's fans are just too stupid to notice it and keep supporting the dumpter fire based on blind hope.

Yeah but our situation is due to young, injured, inexperience, difficult schedule, bad officiating and bad luck.

KU's situation is because they suck.

I always think the most important thing is you hire a head coach who can go and get a good overall staff. In football the positions coaches and coordinators are so important as teachers and as recruiters. So whoever we end up with things could end up working out if he hires the right guys. Seriously, Clonedude could be the freaking head coach if he hires a good staff.

I couldn't agree more. If ISU is in the market for a HC in November, it is critical that JP is willing to not only pay the HC, but also pays to hire quality assistants.

Hell Wisconsin couldn't even get Rhoads from us. That should be a lesson that coaches often wait for the greenest pasture and that place that the southern advantages are real. Sometimes waiting doesn't work out. The difference is Rhoads was gonna get paid regardless. Our best bet is a lower level school as they may take the bird in hand to guarantee a pay day and an opp. To take one more step of it works out.

I disagree to some extent. I'll add, I think iowa state has had some outstanding assistant coaches under Rhoads. I think his staff right now is also excellent. What gives?
