Does anyone know any P5 schools that run the 3-4? Is this a unique defense and thus harder to prepare for or is it not all that unique and not difficult to prepare for?

Not really a unique defense, just under-utilized. If you have great LB's it's probably better to use the 4-3. Let your three best guys run around and tattoo people. If you have speed and athleticism, with decent size and depth on d-line you can run the 3-4. They are almost the same defense when its all said and done, because you will normally be rushing at least 4 in the 3-4 defense. Trading a bigger body for a faster body in the end.

Others have alluded to the 3-3-5 & we speak as if we will be using the 3-4. Traditional 3-4 (Steelers) the front 3 were 2 gap players, thus leaving the LBs free to make plays. 3-3-5 is more single-gap & relies more on disruptive DL simply penetrating a gap (Tucker) & potential blitzing by anyone. Also, the 4-3 requires an absolute stud at Mike & not many young Ray Lewis's are around. 3-4 splits to 2 ILB thus splitting the field in half for those 2 ILB. 3-3-5 has the Mike covering the middle only with the extra DB on the edge creating a smaller space for the Mike to have to cover.

In the end, we'll be more aggressive & disruptive but the risk at times will be high. Since we gave up big play after big play last season why not change up our overall strategy? Hope to hell it works

Hopefully Leath is ready. He's our best sized NT unless we want to switch Wendell over which isn't happening. Same goes for Garcia and Aka, they are the best sized DE's for the 3-4 we have.

We have a lot of bodies talented enough on the DL this year, but hopefully they are developed enough and mentally ready.

In know Peters was hurt last year, but the fact he's now a starter and even team captain he must be bringing something to the D that should improve it. Not to mention Harris and Jones have some game changing potential to go with him at LB. Assuming the DL produces this year the defense could do a total 180.

It's better to push players to quit instead of babying the mentally weak. The Dirty Thirty wasn't bad for how hard they were pushed and had a bunch of people quit.

I disagree. I look at it as it's sad on Cousin's part that he has been here 3 years and needed to be motivated. He just wanted PT given to him without working for it. And we don't need those types on our team no matter how good they are or how much losing them hurts depth.

No, it is better to get guys to produce, regardless of whether they need a carrot or the whip, than to have them quit. They failed to do so. It is a tough task, but figuring out how to get the best from a young guy is the primary challenge of being a coach.

The antiquated single-minded approach works great for movies and romanticizing about teams of long ago, as well as teams with an abundance of natural talent.
