Hoiberg Watch 2015: Thursday, May 28 Thread

The thing about him saying "dream job" and "near the grandparents" and all that jazz..it is true...but there are multiple truths....meaning, I love my current job and situation with my family....doesn't mean I wouldn't consider other things in the future or if things were sweet enough, now.

I've been on MANY hiring committees....and even been on some where the same candidate applied for multiple positions...amazing how in front of an interviewer, the job at hand is "exactly" what they are looking for, fits with their long term goals, etc. No different with coaches...whoever we hire will have a "plan" for the program...will talk about how great ISU/Ames is, etc....but will likely not retire here. I've said it and many others have, this is a decision that basically makes him a blip on our coaching radar at ISU (full credit to him for turning it around, etc), but staying and sustaining success and there is a building named after him/statue.

What he said he was going to do. Bring a National Championship to Ames. He made zero elite 8s, no final fours, no championship. Didn't even win the Big12. He put us on the map no doubt, and being national ranked is great. But there is no way he accomplished what he wanted to here. I thought he had 3 Final Four Capable Teams. Things just didn't happen.

Rumor is that Hoiberg is in Chicago, eh?

Makes sense. I'm in Chicago and I have been swooning uncontrollably the past hour.

He must be close.

If he leaves...the way it's all shaking out...he absolutely will be thought of this way 1st by many.

Fred called a team meeting when none of the players were in town so he could tell an empty room that he was leaving ISU. It's the perfect plan to prevent all leaks of information!
 
What if he stays....has a change of heart...decides ISU is where he wants to be...
yeah...pipe dream. That doesn't happen at ISU. If it's too good to be true...it probably is.

Not sure what stage of grief you're in, but I'm intrigued.
 
I feel like we're awaiting the Governor's stay of execution. Those don't usually happen.

If he stays several Fanatics will have to figure out how to un-burn their Hoiberg jerseys.

Good post. Everyone always says how "competitive" Fred is. I don't really believe that anymore.

If he was a true competitor, he wouldn't leave his team, and his school, hanging like this before they accomplished really any of their goals. He didn't even win the conference. Only got to the Sweet Sixteen once. And this past year IMO, they performed worse than their talent level... which is on coaching IMO. No way this team shouldn't have gotten beat in the first round of the NCAA Tourney by a much less talented team.

Fred obviously did a lot of great things here, but he will be far from ISU's best head coach ever. We were almost always a VERY one dimensional team. We could usually score with anyone, but that was about it. No defense, no discipline, not good enough at rebounding, etc. He was the ultimate players coach.... they could do what they wanted for the most part. And it bit him in the rear end this year when BDJ did just that, and ruined the chemistry on the team and had us out in the first round.

Fred was a good recruiter, and a good coach, but I wouldn't say "great". LE and Floyd are still better ISU MBB coaches than Fred was, and Orr will still have much more of a legacy than Fred now because Orr never left ISU.

Johnny's in Hilton will never be replaced by "Freddy's" IMO. And it shouldn't be.

LE had an elite eight appearance and won the conference regular season. Those are the only arguments for him being a better coach than Fred was. Based on their entire bodies of work it's no doubt that Fred was better than LE. No idea how you think Floyd was better than Fred.
