Utah 47, Oregon St. 37 (F)

Utah being #9 is a joke. They have no bad losses really, but they are only 2-4 against the RPI top 50. Cant fault them for beating all their competition that is lower down the RPI rankings, but they have had 6 games against top 50 teams to make a case for deserving the #9 ranking and in those games have proven nothing to say they are a top 10 caliber team

Did they have peach baskets in the gym or are they trying to get in the Big Ten?

All these teams that score 40 or 50 points a game will attribute the low scoring to their defense. When the tournament rolls around a good defensive night against a team averaging 80 and they'll still lose by 15 simply because they can't score themselves.

The shortening of the shot clock is coming VERY soon.

In November for all of college basketball I'm willing to bet.

These scores this year have been so ridiculous. I can't believe how many games have ended with teams only scoring in the 30s and 40s.

To be fair, Utah's Adjusted Scoring Margin is 4th in the country. Much of that is due to their defense but their offense isn't complete garbage (like Virginia's). Utah has an offensive quotient (per EPSN) of 6.1 which is better than Baylor (5.0), Virginia (1.2), Texas (4.5), UNI (1.0), and is equal to Wichita State (6.1).

Iowa State is 15.2 on offense but -0.7 on defense (that's bad).

Utah is averaging 73 ppg on offense (49th), and giving up 55.6 (9th) on defense. In their last ten games prior to this one, Utah was averaging close to 75 ppg. OSU is averaging 60.7 ppg on offense (319th), and 57.1 ppg on defense (11th).

So, it's not like Utah is typically a low-scoring team. Perhaps OSU wanted to make it a defense game, and Utah was comfortable enough with that style to play that kind of game.

(Rankings according to those on ESPN)

The college game is so boring right now, besides a few of us of course.

The shot clock shouldn't matter. Coaches should be embarrassed by the type of ball they are playing and try to make the game more exciting. It all lies on the coaches to change this, changing the rules won't do it all.

No, the logical thing to do is to take the most recent result and make lots of conclusions based on that single result.

So a coach like Ben Jacobson at UNI should scrap something that works for his program (slowing the game down, playing strong defense, have an efficient offense -- currently 25-2 this season) and go back to more of the style he tried to play last year (more transition offense, higher scoring, less defense -- went 16-15 last season) to appease the college basketball fans and make the game "more exciting." The job of the coach is to win games, if you have to do that with a ballgame in the 40s, so be it.

Haha. Exactly. Utah has been beating the crap out of the other Pac-12 teams all season. I'm not claiming they're elite or anything but they have been pretty dang impressive.

Oh, and count me in as one who doesn't give a rip about low scoring. That's why I love college basketball, there is such a variance of styles that it makes it all the more interesting. I don't watch just because I'm hoping every shot the teams shoot goes in.

I hate UNI but I get really sick of some of "our" fans at ISU ranting about low scores. Who cares how other teams play. If it works for them then have at it.

At this rate, it'll be a matter of one possession per team, per game with college football overtime rules. Boy, that would sure be exciting to watch.

Also, no one asked about UNI. Stop acting like people here are taking shots at them.

Paul Westhead says yes. If I wanted a nap I would watch "Kirk Ferentz's greatest punts on 4th and 1."

I never said anything about anyone taking shots at UNI. I just used them as an example. Next time I'll use Virginia or Wisconsin as an example so I don't offend you.

Why, as Farminclone pointed out, should a coach have to change his style of play if it is successful and is winning games? If Iowa State was undefeated and ranked #1 right now, but only averaged 50 points a game, I'm guessing there would be very few people upset with the coaching/style of play. Each team is different, and to me that's what makes the college game so entertaining, especially the NCAA Tournament. As opposed to the NBA where its all about scoring and no defense.

It's boring to watch teams play and score in the 50's. And generally, that style doesn't fly in the P5. That's why you won't see successful teams in the P5 play that way. It's one thing to have a stifling defense. It's another to play down the shot clock on offense.

People dogging Utah...keep in mind that Utah is one of the only decent teams Wichita State has even played this season...and they lost to them.

When you start digging you find that the only thing of merit out of the entire MVC is the dominant nature of UNI's win over WSU...but it was a home win after all. Beyond that you see that WSU has no quality wins, UNI lost to something called an Evanston, and why should any team be given so much credit for a home win against a team with no good wins?
