Actually a group of investors called the "Kansas Town Company" bought the land to set up trade along the river there and named their settlement "Kansas". This happened long before Kansas became a state. The derps were actually Missourians who were too stupid to realize that their city had no connection to anything real named Kansas except a border.
Kansas City, Kansas is actually on the Kansas River. The Kansas River never enters the State of Missouri.
