New foreign commit - Giorgos Tsalmpouris

Yeah he's not passing up pro opportunities to come redshirt a season in Ames, so whoever suggested that would be crazy. Looks like he could contribute while we wait for McKay to get eligible. Hard to find 7 footers that move well and have a good feel for a jump shot. Plus its a bonus that he's a lefty, helps in shot blocking. Excited to see what this young man can become after putting some weight on and some development! Immediate impact depth though with that skill set.

for a while now. Rivals has him top-50 (#44), and lists a decent group of offers - Maryland, Pitt, ND, Rutgers, and Temple. With a good summer, he'll certainly have a great chance at getting some looks from better programs than that. Villanova is keeping an eye on him too. He is playing locally to 'Nova, at West Town HS, and it could be a good fit.....probably only IF their current C Daniel Ochefu (also a West Town product) looks like a likely 2015 NBA Draft entry.
Athletically, right now, he's something like Roy Hibbert - not really too fluid or explosive. But I've heard that he's better offensively than Steven Adams was @ the same stage. This summer on the AAU circuit will tell a lot about his current skill level.

How do we recruit overseas? Honest question. Cold call these kids and pull an Uncle Sam "I want you"?

So have seen his named spelled Georgios, Giorgos, Girogos all by the media within last 30 minutes.

Look at the reply to this post. It seems this is mistaking GT for another greek player all ready in the US named Giorgios Papagiannis.

For everyone saying he would not pass up money to come redshirt at Iowa State, Greece is not a country you want to play professional basketball in. Iowa State alum, Jared Homan, only got paid a fraction of his contract because his team couldn't financially honor their roster's contracts. The entire economy is crap.. maybe he won't redshirt next season but I don't see him contributing much more than a body in garbage time.

Can we just call him:

Looks like he has some Niang type skills. Taller than Niang, but not as quick or polished. His shot outside is definitely slow, but he has a good enough shot to be a stretch 5 and bring the opponent's big out of the lane. It at least needs to be respected. Kid needs 30 lbs of muscle, but he'll get that. I think that he's a great addition in that he'll fit the offensive style and yet is tall enough to at least force big guys to shoot tough shots over him. I think that he has the potential to be a replacement for Georges in a few years...he can post up and run the pick and roll.

BTW, maybe CPR should look at that kid with the faux hawk that looks like he's about 40 for the DL.

Stop, please, just stop. He's not redshirting. He's not flying halfway across the world so he can sit out a year.

If for nothing else, gives us a 7' guy on the scout team to help prepare the team against other big guys.
