Cooke update- he's a Cyclone!

Re: Cooke update

Exactly. Everyone alluding to us not needing him (or someone like him) or that he is a reserve guy are really overvaluing what we have IMO. It is not Cooke that will be the reserve. He has a more complete game than any of our young guys. Seeing him as SDW is laughable, and I am a SDW guy.
Knownothing said we have Georges, Morris, and a few others as stars. Who are these others? Our roster has the supporting cast position filled, what we need are more stars and even starter level players. Cooke and Anderson are those guys. Starters and go-to guys from Day 1 in 2015.

I highly doubt Anderson will start over Niang and McKay nor can he play the 3 and start over Williams or Nader.

Depends on what your definition of stars is. You might throw in guys like BDJ and supposedly Nader in with those two but they are unknowns at this point (although a lot of people have been assuming BDJ is going to come in and light the world on fire as well some people have said Nader was the best player in practice last year).

He will start over McKay and be the best all-round post we have (better defender & rebounder than Georges). I know we love to hype all unproven Cyclones into 15 and 8 guys, but Anderson has proven to be that.
Fred is not cooling on top-100 recruits and ssying they are willing to keep one of these open, just to turn around and grab a must redshirt senior-to-be transfer that will come off the bench. Neither would a place like Arizona.

What on earth are you basing Anderson "not being able to start over McKay" on?

He averaged 15 & 7 in the ACC. If he comes here, he's gotta be the favorite to start over McKay IMO.

BDJ has no place in a Cooke discussion given he is not going to be on the roster in 2015-16 and Nadar is known for his highlights giving an inaccurate impression of what kind of player he is.

Yeah, pretty much this.

Wait.....did you just prognosticate the ability of a player who hasnt even commited to us over the ability of a guy that hasnt played one minute in a Cyclone uniform and wont until 2nd semester?

Ok we need football or something to come back soon

Re: Cooke update

BDJ has no place in a Cooke discussion given he is not going to be on the roster in 2015-16 and Nadar is known for his highlights giving a false sense of what kind of player he is.

I realized that on BDJ after I posted... I guess I've never seen highlights on Nader that lead me to believe he's going to be better than he really is. I'm only saying what I've read here and that someone on the team earlier this year said he was the best player on the team in practice. That's all I have to go off of (that and I suppose if you want to throw in that at NIU, he averaged 13 and 5 his soph year and has been able to sit out and learn from Fred for a year).

I don't really care who starts. I just want as many good players on the team as possible.

Nonetheless, people do need to realize what kind of player we are getting with McKay. The Indian Hills people say he will make Hogue look like a JV player (and I love Hogue and his potential to be even better in all areas this year).

No, why do you ask?

Re: Cooke update

I'd be curious to see the comparisson with Morris.

Thomas: 21.2 minutes, 5.5 points, 2.1 rebounds, 1.1 assists, 0.5 turnovers, 66.7% FT, 36.7% FG, 33.6% 3P.
Cooke: 26.3 minutes, 8.2 points, 2.6 rebounds, 2.5 assists, 1.6 turnovers, 73.7% FT, 45.9% FG, 45.6% 3P.
Morris: 28.1 minutes, 6.8 points, 2.6 rebounds, 3.7 assists, 0.8 turnovers, 84.7% FT, 43% FG, 40.6% 3P.

Diallo is starting over all of them :jimlad:

Re: Cooke update

Obviously, this is a slow time between seasons. There is more news in the DM Register than there is on this update thread...:twitcy:

Re: Cooke update

For the millionth time. This is Hoiball. It doesn't matter one bit who starts and who doesn't. It's all about putting lineups out on the floor that Fred can use to exploit mismatches. If guys are capable of doing that, they will get minutes.

Love it. Both of their games will greatly improve, and having those 2 starting together in 2 years would be awesome to watch.

Re: Cooke update

That's your opinion, and that's fine. I respect that.

Someone earlier in the thread asked if this kid was the real deal or not? I brought up the facts. He was a 3 star recruit out of high school with no offers from any bigger named basketball schools. He had a good solid freshman season at Oregon State, averaging 8 pts, 3 rebs, and 2 assists per game and shot an outstanding 45% from 3.

We are having to beat out Dayton and St. Joe's for him, not Kentucky and Kansas. That is a fact. That is who he is.

That is enough for me, and it's obviously enough for Fred, and that is all that matters. I just don't want to see, if he commits to us, people saying how he's the next Kane and he will lead us to the Final Four or something. That is probably not likely and would be unfair expectations IMO.

I will be thrilled if we can get him. But I think my expectations of him will also be realistic too, and not in some kind of dreamworld.

We sure are lucky to have you, the voice of reason, here to temper all of our lofty, unrealistic expectations.

Anderson's averages against ACC competition last season was 13 ppg and 7 rpg along a negative assist to turnover ratio and one missed 3 pt attempt.

McKay already is a better rim protector and low post defender than Anderson and by 2015-16, his offensive skill level under Fred and the staff will also improve to complement McKay's advantage in athleticism over Anderson. Suggesting Anderson will definitely start over McKay is a real reach on your part.

I highly doubt Fred is telling Anderson that he will definitely be a surefire starter but he obvously will get plenty of PT in the frontcourt rotation. If Anderson wants a guarantee to be sure starter for his final season, he'll probably end up someplace else other than ISU.

It is a good thing for Ejim he graduated as it woild be embarrassing for the Big 12 POY to not even get major minutes. Good thing for him that McKay was not eligible this year.

Oh, the CF hype.
Yes, McKay is athletic and will play a role that has not been filled under Fred, but he is not starting over Georges or Anderson. Yeah, anything could happen and Fred is not telling any player they are surefire starters, but we are recruiting & expect Anderson to be that. I know it us hard to believe, but there are guys better than what we have. From what has been displayed by each thus far, Anderson is superior in all but shot-blocking ino.
