Cooke update- he's a Cyclone!

Re: Cooke update

45% from 3 as a FR in the Pac12 is very impressive, IMO. 13 straight games with a made 3 as a FR is clutch. He is on the radar screen of NBA scouts. He is a combo so he can play the 1 or 2 and play with or without Monte.

I would say there's a lot to be excited about.

Re: Cooke update

We have Georges, Monte, and a few others who are the stars. We also need guys like Naz last year that can hit the big shot, do there part. Role players are needed on every team. Not everyone can average 20 and 10

Re: Cooke update

I will be giddy if we get him. He's going to be a really nice, versatile player.

Re: Cooke update

It's definitely his 3pt% that I'm excited about. As another poster said, it's unfair to assume any future player could replicate McGee's production, but I think that's the type of player we're looking for.

Having said that, I wouldn't even be a little bit concerned if we don't land him, as we already have several young guys who I think can fill the role.

Re: Cooke update

Archie Miller just signed a big extension with Dayton this season. He's not leaving any time soon, so that point is moot. I doubt Dayton will land Cooke, but their program definitely made some noise this year and it's a beautiful school (my sister went there and I visited her there). If he's visiting St Joe's and Dayton, I would think Dayton is the only team we really have to beat. They return most of their starters and Miller can recruit fairly well.

Re: Cooke update

Fred wouldn't have had him here for a visit if there wasn't potential.

Re: Cooke update

I was going to ask the exact same thing, but figured I'd get ripped for not being drunk on the kool aid.

To tell you the truth, when I watch some of his videos, I see Sherron Dorsey-Walker. Which isn't a bad thing, it just is what it is. If that's what people are expecting, then fine, but if they are expecting something more than that, then their expectations might be a little high.

He wasn't that highly recruited out of high school. He was a 3 star. Had offers from schools like Oregon State, Penn State, St. Joe's, etc. No bigger named basketball schools.

He's become VERY intriguing though because he shot 45% from 3 last year. Took 90 3's last year, so he put quite a few of them up too. So the kid can shoot. So that alone gives him a great chance in Fred's offense.

I think he's worth the scholly, because he's already proven he can shoot at the college level, but he is pretty slight and only averaged 8 pts, 2 rebs, and 2 assists per game at Oregon State. Dorsey-Walker could have easily averaged that playing at Oregon State IMO.

I think Cooke is a quality player that will do well here, so you definitely should take him. He just might not be the next DeAndre Kane, that's all. But not many are.

I agree with you that when I watch the video of him, I also also immediately saw SDW, but I also see a little more confident, poised, and a slightly stronger SDW, which to be honest, are the biggest things SDW lacks right now. However, I think the main reason people are so excited about this kid is the fact that he would have 3 years to play and those stats are nothing to slouch at coming from a true freshman. Shoot, look at Monte Morris and all the hype he is getting from both us and the national media for next year and his stats really don't look that much different than Cooke's when it is all said and done. Therefore, when it comes to stats, we should expect more out of say a one-year transfer like Anderson than say a 3-year guy like Cooke. I also don't think fans are expecting Cooke to come in and be a star like a Kane or Niang, but rather a solid role player like a McGee, Christopherson, or Babb. Shoot, that is all we need at this point anyway.

On a side note, I think people are discounting Dayton in this whole process. They are a VERY solid team right now and are also a school that cares very much about their basketball as their attendance shows. While I like our chances, other than some here, I actually fear Dayton more than St. Joes.

Morris shattered the assist to turnover ratio... As a freshman. Kind of a big thing to find a freshman that can take care of the ball like he did. Plus when he was called upon to score he did and had quick hands on defense. Not that I watched a lot of Cooke but to compare most freshmans stats last year to Morris' doesn't quite work.

While you are trying to counter my point, all your are doing is confirming it. All I'm saying is that there is a lot more to freshman potential than simple ppg, apg, rpg and even 3 pt % figures. Monte Morris is a good example and Cooke easily could be too. There is a reason why NBA scouts seem to like him (at least so people keep talking about on here), and I myself was also fairly impressed by his video even though most highlight videos are made to do that.

Re: Cooke update

I completely agree. I will always trust Fred. Why wouldn't you at this point?

I'm just trying to gauge people's expectations about Cooke, that's all. I don't like it when a fanbase heaps on unrealistic expectations on these kids. It doesn't seem fair to them at all.

I tend to set my expectations for these kids a little lower than some, and then if they surpass my expectations, great. If not, so be it.

I try to keep in mind that for every DeAndre Kane or Tyrus McGee, there's a KJ Bluford.

Cooke has GREAT potential, especially under Fred. If you take his 8 pts, 3 rebs, and 2 assists per game as a freshman and project those forward, assuming he improves each and every year, then you would be getting one heck of a basketball player. I would welcome him aboard no question about it.

But it's not as if we're landing some can't miss 5 star prospect either. Just so we all understand that. We're not beating Kentucky and Kansas for this kid. Let him be himself and create his own legacy at ISU if he comes here.

I definitely see what you are saying. If Cooke were to turn out to be another Babb, Christopherson, Allen, or Tyrus, I'd be more than happy. Also, from what I've read, I don't feel like CF has blown him too much out of proportion. If you want 5-star hype, you need to look no further than our ridiculous RV thread to see that (maybe I'm a hypocrite with that one since I had a few posts myself in that one ;-)).

Correct.

Or go back to the recruitment of David Irving in football. He had virtually no other interest. But yet, just because of his size and potential, there were numerous people on these very message boards that actually thought he could end up jumping to the NFL after 2 or 3 years here.

I kept saying, "slow down everyone". Over and over again the coaches kept saying how raw he was and that he had a LOT to learn. But yet, everyone still kept blowing their expectations for him way out of proportion. And now I wonder to myself, how much of that all went to Irving's head?

And no, I'm not saying people are having these high expectations of Hallice Cooke. I have not seen any of that from anyone thus far. I'm just trying to prevent it from happening.

I hope Fred lands him, and I hope he's a great Cyclone. Who wouldn't? But let's all let him be himself and create his own legacy here if he comes here. Don't say he has to be the next DeAndre Kane or he's a bust. That is unfair.

No offense, but you tend to wet blanket everything, so it's hard to take your warnings seriously.

Re: Cooke update

Where is it coming from that he is on the NBA radar? I've said it before in the recruit trip thread and got blasted, but count me in as one of those that is neither here or there on this kid. He shot 45%, that really is great. But I do not see this kid beyond a reserve player until he is a senior.

I'd love to have a 45% 3 pt shooter coming in off the bench, but I do not see super star written on this kid nor do I see why an NBA exec would already be watching??

I still prefer to keep the scholly open for next year if we really truly think we have a chance to land the trifecta of Ellenson, Noskowiak and Diallo. (or for that matter the Ukranian Assassin)

Re: Cooke update

That's your opinion, and that's fine. I respect that.

Someone earlier in the thread asked if this kid was the real deal or not? I brought up the facts. He was a 3 star recruit out of high school with no offers from any bigger named basketball schools. He had a good solid freshman season at Oregon State, averaging 8 pts, 3 rebs, and 2 assists per game and shot an outstanding 45% from 3.

We are having to beat out Dayton and St. Joe's for him, not Kentucky and Kansas. That is a fact. That is who he is.

That is enough for me, and it's obviously enough for Fred, and that is all that matters. I just don't want to see, if he commits to us, people saying how he's the next Kane and he will lead us to the Final Four or something. That is probably not likely and would be unfair expectations IMO.

I will be thrilled if we can get him. But I think my expectations of him will also be realistic too, and not in some kind of dreamworld.

Re: Cooke update

Personlally I think Cooke is a player that can out produce his original ranking coming out of HS. He wasn't suppose to contribute his Freshman year at OSU, but due to his work ethic he forced himself into the starting line up by the time the Pac 10 Conference started and then produced against other top compition. He already looked like he gained weight from HS through his Freshman year and a RS year should help him even more. He can definetly fill the role of Naz/McGee ball handler off the bench right away and if he progresses a starters role later in his career. Plus he has already proven he can play PG at the BCS level if needed which is always a good option for Fred to have.

As for the pro potiential that comes from Fran Franchilla tweet.

@franfraschilla: Ouch. NBA guys like this St. Anthony's kid. Oregon State guard Hallice Cooke plans to transfer - http://t.co/GLvWO971Fj
