Josh Davis

Or he could tie up a scholarship for 4 years and never contribute meaningful minutes. I don't really think Fred would let that happen though, he seems to value having open roster spots which allow him to compete for these big time transfers.

I remember saying Railey was never going to amount to anything and it would be dumb to waste a redshirt year on him and tie up a scholarship for another year. A lot of posters on here disagreed, but apparently Fred didn't as he was gone at the end of the year.
If they athlete wants to leave to get more playing time somewhere else, fine. But if he is putting in the work and just not panning out ... that's a whiff by the coaching staff and they owe it to the athlete to honor the commitment.

Well that's all well and good in theory, but it doesn't help you win games which is what Fred is trying to do. Sometimes you have to cut your losses.

Okoro and Long sat behind upperclassmen, no surprise or shame in that. It seems like some people are just waiting to weed these guys out when the alternatives are ... Hogue and a couple guys who've never played a minute of college ball. At this point in time, I have no more confidence in those guys than I do Long and Okoro and anyone who does is just guessing.

You're right there is no shame in sitting behind KL, Will, Babb and McGee. It doesn't guarantee success or lack thereof.

All the newcomers are on an even playing field for the most part and they are all unproven. That even goes for Monte Morris and Matt Thomas. I'm not sure why it's any different to speculate that MT and/or MM will be starting, any more than it is to speculate that Okoro is going to be some great defender, simply because of some comments made by coaches.

All the Jucos, SDW, Naz, Okoro, MM and MT are unproven, but will have their best opportunity this year, to break into the starting line up. I guess you could throw Percy into that mix also, because most bigs take a couple of years to click too.

The only two givens are Niang and Ejim. Obviously a guy like Josh Davis or similar high profile recruit would be givens too if we were to sign one or more.

No they don't. This isn't how big boy basketball works now. If you're not going to work out as a contributor in some fashion, you're only owed 1 year on your scholarship. Fred helps them land a place that they will contribute, which is better for everyone. And there's always going to be whiffs. Even at programs like Kentucky. Recruiting and evaluating is not an exact science, and potential doesn't always translate to success for a variety of reason.

Sledge and McKnight are not regretful that they transferred. That much I'm sure of.

Thanks for your wisdom about the rough and tumble world of college basketball.

But if the kid says, "I like it here and I'd like to stay and get my education even if I don't get much playing time" I would hope we would honor that request. If we're not willing to do that, I don't know how you're going to recruit effectively. Word gets around.

That's outrageous. Scholarships are year by year. He should be happy that as an inferior player he got 2-3 years of free school. If he obviously isn't good enough to play at a D1 school, why would you expect a D1 school to pay for his scholarship? This isn't a handout.

I agree for the most part, but seeing them not even get a few minutes in games leads me to believe they were not ready for that level of competition which supports my previous statement.
They may well not have been last year. But we're talking about next year and my whole point is that I don't understand why some people seem to be on the verge of writing these guys out of the equation when we have no other proven guys at these positions. Not one.

Can we just straight up swap out Amardi for Josh Davis? Both only have 1 year to play and the impact Josh Davis can have is far far greater than Amardi.

No it doesn't hurt your reputation because pretty much all programs do it. Winning is what most kids care about. The good recruits aren't concerned with getting recruited over because they are confident in their abilities. Just check out the powerhouse programs as an example.

Also, most of these kids want to PLAY in addition to getting their education. ISU is not the only school that can provide an education, and often times they can find a better fit on the court as well.

I'm not saying Fred "pushes" kids out or should do that.

But I think it's ok to sit down with a kid and have a candid conversation and let him know that you don't see him contributing much in the future, but you can help him land in a good spot that he might have a better opportunity to contribute.

That is pretty much happening at every major basketball school so we have to trust that Fred can manage to do the right thing in that situation.

Another hard-nosed businessman! What do you think our coaches are telling the mothers of these kids when they are sitting in their living rooms? "The scholarship is for one year. If things go well and we don't find someone better, we will extend it for another year." Good grief. In recruiting, a coach's credibility is all he has.

I completely agree.

If we do get Davis, What would that mean for Ejim and Niang? I don’t think Davis would want to come off the bench. He would be a great get and provide depth, but I don’t think Fred needs any more low post scoring.

Davis is a stud. Ejim is a stud and Georges is a stud. All 3 would start. Melvin rebounding out of the 3 position makes me drool.

Looking at Fred’s past lineups, It’s obvious that he likes smaller lineups with more shooting. Ejim at the 3 would raise some questions. Why would Fred take him out of that position when he is just starting to excel in it.

Davis isn't a bench player. Of course neither are Ejim or Niang.

Obviously all three would start and Fred has said he will adapt his style to suit his talent.

Ejim can defend the 3 so there is no constraint there.

Those 3 would combine to score 40-45 ppg which would take a lot of pressure off our young backcourt.

We could also go with a smaller line up and rotate those three keeping them fresh and out of foul trouble

PG - Morris
SG - Thomas
SF - Ejim
PF - Niang
C - Davis

This potential lineup by conference play makes me think happy thoughts.

I'm not so sure Fred only likes a "small lineup with more shooting". This was just our most effective way to play over the last 2 years. If Davis came, I have to beleive that he, Niang, and Ejim would all play very significant minutes. Forget about "starting" or "not starting"

Because you've seen what Amardi can do while wearing the cardinal & gold? No reason to say something like this. It may very well be true, but nobody knows who would fit better in our scheme of things.

Oh these pi$$ing matches are great. Look, the only thing we know for sure is, we are persuing these players so at least 1 player scheduled to receive a scholly probably wont have one for any list of reasons we have already discussed.
