Sorry this is a bit late. Had some minor surgery yesterday and wasn't up and about most of the day. Somehow, Buster's grand slam got me out of bed. But I will say that I am as surprised as anyone that the Giants came back to be the first team to win the NLDS after starting 0-2. And to do that on the road, in a park where Cincinnati had not lost three in a row all season is even more amazing. This series was over after game two in San Francisco. All the momentum was with the Reds. The Giants couldn't hit anything and their best pitchers had given up too many easy runs.
You have to feel for Dusty Baker (or maybe you don't, I dunno). He just cannot get it done, no matter where he's managing - San Francisco, Chicago, or Cincinnati (so far). I do still feel that the Reds were the better team this year in this series. But that's why the games are played and why I love baseball so much. You just never know how things are going to go from game to game. It sucks for Reds fans and I'm not going to sit here and say "there's always next year," because stupid platitudes like that don't really mean much. It just sucks to come that close and not get anywhere - again.
If there is one person I don't feel sorry for, it's Mat Latos. He was the guy two years ago, when he was with San Diego, who "guaranteed" a Padres win in the final game of the season (that he was starting) against San Francisco at AT&T Park that would hand them the NL West title. This was probably even more stupid than when, in the previous series between the teams, SF's Jonathan Sanchez guaranteed a sweep of the Padres in San Diego (which didn't happen). The Giants had a three game lead going into the final three game series with SD. The Giants dropped the first two, prompting the comment from Latos. Result? 3-0 win for San Francisco. The Giants head for the postseason (and their WS trophy), the Padres hit the links. So it was kind of nice to see Latos whizz away another big game, regardless of which team he plays for now.
I'm not sure who I would like to face in the next series. The Giants have a better season record against St. Louis (3-3), than the Nats (1-5). But I don't feel like Washington is as good as they had been prior to September. Either way, it should be a fun series to watch. Now, would somebody please just knock the Yankees out once and for all? Come on, Oreos!!
