Kansas City BBQ

Oklahoma Joe's in the old gas station. Worth the 30 minute wait over the lunch hour just to place your order.

You don't get the appeal? Huh? Were you poopin your pants while you were in there or somethin?

No, the meat seemed a lot fattier to me than some other BBQ places in KC and I wasn't a huge fan of the people working there.

As a long time resident of the KC area my philosophy is that there is no bad bbq in town, there is just some better than others : )

A couple of comments on the entries so far:
Jack Stack - like I said good but if you want better and more authentic and the almost exact same style try Smoke Stack at 89th and Wornall which is run by the sister of the guy who owns Jack Stack. There beans are better than Jack Stacks and the meat is a little higher quality. Can't beat Jack Stack for the variety though like lamb and fish and the cheesy corn bake.

Arthur Bryants - all time fav, go to the 17th and Brooklyn location for the ultimate experience.

Gates - every once in a while the burnt ends on the bun is the best bbq experience you will ever have but other times too fatty or too salty or both.

LCs - another fav but recently had some Health Dept. issues that have scared off a few folks.

Famous Dave's - consistently good no matter where in the country we have eaten at. We are not zealots on the style of cooking, if it tastes smoky, tender and good with good sauce we are there. While there try the bread pudding, it is excellent.

Smokin Guns, RJs Bob-B-Que, Johnnys were all featured on Diners Drive Inns and Dives recently so the business there has boomed so expect it to be busy.

Ones not mentioned:

Have to try Brobecks at 107th and Nall for the best pulled pork this side of East Tennessee. Their mustard sauce for the pulled pork is excellent.

Others you could try are:

Smokehouse - a cousin of the Jack Stack/Smoke Stack lineage

The Little Pig - a startup in Belton MO has been good the three times I have been there.

Snead's - way south but worth the drive. Call ahead to make sure it is open because they have some funky hours.

Great BBQ and live blues on selected nights. When closed, looks like it could be abandoned, when open it is wall to wall. You will sit a tables where ever there is room, picnic tables that hold 10-12, and sit where you will fit. $5 cover after 9:00 pm if there is live music. If you want to sit for the show, go early. This picture makes it look big, probably only holds 150.

Rosedale BBQ on the Boulevard is awesome as well, the only problem is they only make a certain amount each day and when they sell out they close. Easily the best burnt ends in town, but are usually out of them by lunch time.

Joes i pretty awesome. If you like Ribs I would recommend Wabash. Its outside of KC in Excelsior Springs but they are pretty good.

About 5 years ago, a buddy and I went to K.C. for a weekend of golf, and that Friday night we went to a BBQ place that was locally owned and fantastic.

Here's the problem. I can't remember the name of it and I can't for the life of me remember how to get to it.

The place may have already been mentioned in a couple of posts. We had to drive down a gravel road over a rough railroad track to get to it, but it was still within the city limits of K.C.

Best brisket sandwich I ever had. The cole slaw was also the best I ever had.

The best part was we ate late so we caught the first set of this guy singing the blues. Had a blast.

I know I didn't give much info. to where this place is, but if anyone can help me out so I can find it again, I will be eternally grateful.

If you willing to travel to Sneeds and the Little Pig, then you need to hit Oden's BBQ in Belton. The locals pack it in.

Thanks for all the imput. Now I will just have to find out where these places are at.

They missed a good one. Summit Hickory Pit out in Lee's Summit. Take Highway 50 to the west side of Lee's Summit and get off at Douglas. Trun left over the bridge then turn right onto the frontage road. It is just past the Mexican restaurant with the airplane on top. Great BBQ and coleslaw to die for.

I think you just answered his question.

what is wrong with the people at Jack Stack? Other than it is an actual restaurant and they get sick of white trash coming in expecting it to be a fast casual restaurant and having 0 amount of restaurant common sense.
They most likely are just sick and tired of seeing people come in, in sleeveless t-shirts and camo baseball hats, who let their kids run around the restaurant unattended and who ***** about the prices.
Nice Jean shorts by the way.

Not sure what you're ranting about. But I was referring to Arthur Bryant's.

Yeah, so you were poopin your pants. You probably had never been to an establishment inside a ghetto before. The people working there are part of what makes AB great. They probably gave you hell because you didn't know what you wanted, took too long to order and asked them to repeat themselves 3 or 4 times.
