David Sims charged

If he's suspended for any amount of games, we won't know until the defense takes the field against Northern Illinois. He'll be listed as #1 on the depth chart until then.

I'm inclined to think that handling things internally will amount to no games suspended, but we'll see.

Removing the co-captain label was the right thing to do. Not really sure how I feel about a possible suspension. The high school player in me that saw teammates screw up and coaches look the other way thinks he should be suspended. The fan in me wants to look the other way just like the high school coaches.

I'm an Iowa fan, but don't think this is a biased opinion. I think he should be suspended. One game. That is if the trial is completed before the season starts, or if it's completed mid-season. If the courts delay the trial, then play him. It's not an overly serious crime, but this is an excellent opportunity for Rhoads to show that he will not give his star players preferential treatment. Plus, I also agree with the "high school player feeling". I watched a lot of teammates, even team captains, screw up, and watch coaches waffle on punishment. It never ceased to **** me off.

But, I don't want him to miss the Iowa game. I'd rather watch the Hawks lose to ISU when they give us their best shot than beat them when they don't have all their horses.

I'd suspend him for two games at least.

It has to be something that hurts. I'm sure missing the Iowa game would hurt quite a bit.

If he doesn't miss any games at all, I think that sends the wrong message completely... and I'd be a little worried that Ames would turn into IC. Had KF punished guys more severely from the start, I don't think they'd have as big a problem over there as they do.

2 games is a lot in football...I understand punishing him, but that is about 20% of the schedule for a senior who had never been in trouble before. If he was a freshman who had no track record of being able to stay out of trouble then yes, 2 games would be ideal in an attempt to stop any future problems.

I also believe that while a small part of the equation, how it effects the team needs to be taken into consideration as well.

Great post. Stripping the captain title sends the message to the rest of the team that is needed to show who is in charge. Suspend him one game and move on. Doing something stupid again even if it is a public intox you will get hit again with a suspension.

Stealing is clearly not a good thing but you also have to put it into perspective of other potential offenses.

How about you actual READ what I write for a change?

And now for the facts.

This article is from 8 pm last night:

Iowa State football: David Sims is still Cyclones' top safety | desmoinesregister.com | The Des Moines Register

No charges had been filed yet.

And Here, Rhoads says we'll know more in 24-48 hours. Again, from yesterday.

Iowa State Football: Notes from Big 12 Media Day | Cyclone Fanatic

What do you think Rhoads is going to say when nothing has even been filed yet? Standard coach speak.

Sims is a senior so if he doesn't play at all this year, like you said was possible or you thought might happen, it would be the same as kicking him off. If he doesn't play at all this season, then he is done with Iowa State football.

KF kicked 2 Iowa players off the team for the same thing. Granted, the Iowa players charge was a felony because of the dollar amount, but it's still basically the same crime.

So if Sims had charged just a few more bucks on the card, that would be worth getting kicked off the team, but now he deserves not even a one or two game suspension?

If he gets nothing, then fine. At least we're joining the big boys in terms of how we dish out punishment. But we can no longer put ourselves above Iowa in terms of our discipline. Which is fine by me. If we want to win, we need to find a way to keep our best players on the field. Iowa has done it for a while now. We might as well too, right?

Technically not true. He suspended both of em, then kicked em off later for shoplifting DVDs.

Anyways, it doesn't matter what KF did. We're not Iowa.

Here, this is what I was disagreeing with:

"Could be but sounds pretty bad to me. I don't see him playing much this season, if at all. "

Since CPR has said it will be handled internally and he will be a part of the team, I think its pretty safe to say he will play his Sr season. Yesterday CPR said he would still be a Cyclone for his sr season in the "worst-case scenario". Your mistaken if you think the coach didn't have a pretty good idea what charges would be filed this week. He is a SR, so obviously he will either play this year or be done.

I keep thinking about the kind of player/competitor David is, his on-field accomplishments and team "iron-man" and the more I think about it, the more I feel like a 1 or 2 game suspension is going to be enough to push him harder, and we will see an "angry Sims" when he gets to play. This excites me

Hoks, Freerentz, EIU, blah blah blah same old tired stuff.

This is a joke. The kid used a credit card that wasn't his for over $500 in purchases (allegedly.) Anyone who says "stairs" for a punishment should suffice has serious, serious misplaced priorities.

This is not correct.

The two players (citiboyz, I believe) were removed from the team. But Douglas was kept in school with the intention of reinstating him, but he got arrested for shoplifting DVD's at Walmart. I don't remember who the other one was. He might have been removed at that time, but I know that Douglas was kept in school (of course he was a freshman AA, not a 5th string long snapper).

The other kids that have been kicked off the team have been for drug stamp violations, and of course rape. But a lot of the players with assault charges were never kicked out (Aiello, etc).

But other than that, Kirk has been extremely lax on the discipline of his players. It goes all the way back to Benny Sapp, who was arrested five times in IC before then AD Bob Bowlsby had him removed against the wishes of Ferentz.

If I were an Iowa State fan, though, I would hope that Rhoads hands out discipline like Ferentz does.

Well lets hope that Rhoads keeps all of the punishments doled out "in house" after he "lets the system work." Like ol' Kirk does then, right hypocrite?

It's also interesting how law and order you are for other teams, but not the Hawks.

It is interesting to see that all of the hawks go all over the internet, and defend all of the illegal activity committed by their players, but they are the first to comment other teams.

This is one of the main reason why people don't like them.

I'm not defending anything.

If they hold the trial until the end of the season, so be it. That's the way the system works. He shouldn't miss a game until he's convicted of anything. I believe that for every single player on any team in the country. Being charged and being guilty are two separate cases.

I was arrested and charged with something when I was 18. My "trial" wasn't held until December. The arrest occurred in August. Sometimes, the system just takes a long time. All charges were dropped against me and I moved along. I'm not a conspiracy theorist and think that if a trial is delayed, it's because of the status of said athlete. I think any attorney with his salt can get a trial delayed for any reason.

Like I said - until he's convicted, fine. Let him play. But if he pleads down to another charge before the season starts? He deserves a good suspension - regardless of the school for which he plays. Anyone who says stealing a credit card (allegedly) and running over $500 in charges (allegedly) is not worthy of a suspension is off their rocker.

the kid screwed up, suspend him 1 or 2 games due to the charge, dont let him be a captain, make him run more than some of the others....call it a day on this one. He didnt rape or assault anyone. Made poor judgement but doesnt justify kicking him off the team

Well said. PR has a chance to set the tone on how he will run his program. Choose wisely.

You have to rape or assault someone to be removed from an athletic program?

Sad.
