Thoughts on thursday night game

I only have 5 days of vacation this year. Taking two of them for a football game would be absolutely ridiculous when there are numerous family obligations for many people.

I wouldn't care if I had 20. The thought of, "Just use vacation!" just shows how unfriendly this is to fans. They don't sell any more tickets, it doesn't get on TV and it makes a lot of donating fans struggle to get there.

Couldn't agree more. A family that tailgates with us - from Mason City - will not be able to make it. They both work until 7, and will not spend a day of vacation just to make it to a mid-week game in Ames.

No - it's not about me at all. I'm saying that I don't think it to be a wise move and that's based off my own perceptions. You clearly like the game, based off your own perceptions.

I compared the attendance numbers between the first Thurs games and the Sat games prior to them. The numbers were pretty much a wash, with the Sat game being slightly better. The UNI game ended up skewing that, but I feel that game is a packed house Thurs, Sat or Monday.

So if you consider the fact that the Thurs game is stated for the benefit of the students (which is fine) and they have increased numbers, one has to conclude that is at the cost of regular ticket holder/buyers attending. You can't have similar attendance numbers and an increase in one demographic without a decrease in another.

Where's the money coming from?

I know what my situation is - not getting tickets. They guy I get them with isn't getting them either. And I know the stress it puts on a number of other ticket holders. That's why I see it as an unwise move. We'll see what attendance says next Thurs and who makes up those numbers.

I also don't like 11:00 kicks on Sat for similar reasons - although it really doesn't affect me personally at all.

I like how people come up with anecdotal evidence to support their theories why they would make a better AD. Do you really think this stuff isn't considered in making these decisions?

If JP comes to a conclusion different than yours he's necessarily wrong huh?

What about the family's that are "busy" for the holiday weekend?
We have had pretty high numbers compared to having a game on Saturday of Labor Day weekend. Perhaps it is just best to alternate.

Not exactly - but it's definitely a contributing factor this season. I didn't like these games before any of this happened to me personally. But if this game was on a Sat - it would be much easier for me to pick up the season. Facts for me is that I really don't care for the Thurs game, will be gone for the iowa game and have another commitment for the Army game. With the KSU game being moved out of the package, that leaves me with only 3 home games out of 6 or 7. Not exactly a stellar financial investment - I think most would agree.

So get cheaper tickets.

Another aspect is how do recruits come to the games. Two of my sons are in football and unable to go to the game. it will also be one in the morning when we get home for the two kids i do take. My choice I know.

I doubt this would be the game to bring recruits in, but I could be wrong.

Good luck getting anybody involved in farming to this game as well. Not happening.

Your choice not to use your vacation. That's fine. Good luck trying to get anyone involved in farming to attend a Saturday game in late October as well. At this time of year, there are no crops to harvest, no fields to spray. Cattle farmers and hog farmer are a different story. Yep animals need to be taken care of, but they need to be taken care of on Saturdays as well.

Again, it is a choice. I have a friend who lives in Iowa City who can't make the 11 a.m. kickoffs because his children are involved in flag football or soccer. Does that mean ISU should never, ever schedule an 11 a.m. game on Saturday?

Obviously a Thursday night game is not for everyone, but neither is a Saturday game. It's only one game of the season. Some people are attending which may never have attended, while others aren't. I think it all evens out in the long run.

I am not really in favor of the Thursday night games. I prefer Saturdays. I think the "students go home" argument is a lame one. The students who are true fans will stay in Ames and go to the game. The students who go home are not going to go to the games anyway and will not have season tickets as they go home every weekend anyway.

JP must have Labor Day weekend plans for the family. There is NO reason to have the Thursday night game, other than TV.

As far as 11:00 am games. I hate them. We need to leave by 6 am or sooner in order to get there and that only allows a couple hours of tailgating. I prefer the 1 pm kickoff. I can understand the need to be on TV though.

And the worst thing of all. Night games in November. That is the most idiotic thing of all. You can expect temperatures to drop at least 20 degrees or more at night. The Missouri game last year was pure MISERY. A sparse crowd. Terribly cold. I don't really think it does us a lot of good to show a half empty stadium on a freezing November night.

I agree with you about JPollard...Probably has a golf outing planned for the weekend...The stiff could invite me but I take it as a badge of honor NOT to be invited!!!!!

Anyway I agree with you about those eleven am games...back when I was drinking it was no fun to start drinking at seven in the morning to be ready for an eleven am football game!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I like 230 games the best, plenty of time to get to the stadium and plenty of time to drive back home!!!!!!!!!!!

.......& remember.......Buy Football Tickets.............

So get cheaper tickets.

Or sit at home and watch it on tv with an even better vantage.

Why would I ever buy something I'm not going to use half of?

The idea that somebody should just settle for lesser seats is about the dumbest one out there. If you guys like hillsides or endzones - good for you. I don't and probably wouldn't go if they were GIVEN to me.

What about the family's that are "busy" for the holiday weekend?

I would easily say that Saturday games, even on Labor Day weekend, are more family-friendly. On a school night like this, where the husband or wife maybe start work Friday at 7, kids have to catch the school bus, etc. - good luck seeing them in Ames and then getting home at 11 or later.
Students had better turn out in DROVES to make this work, because it's costing us more than a few families of 3, 4, 5 or more.

You don't seem like you even enjoy football games.

You couldn't drive me away with a stick. This is the first year I can actually go to all games after moving back from STL.

I am sure everyone has a conflict with game days, game times, etc. **** happens. We all have to adjust our schedules around life. Get over it, there is never going to be a time that will work for everyone. Take your ******* matches to PM's.

.

Not sure where you got that from - nor why you insist on picking fights with people.

You base that on what? The fact that I don't like sub-par viewing and can't attend the first three game?

Yep - I suppose that means I hate football games. :skeptical:

For some it could be. It seems that there are as many people that feel Thursday is better than Sat. as those who do not. The attendance has been better for the Thursday game than the Saturday Labor Day game. I would like to see them alternate, unless they have info that makes them think TV is a strong chance.

I would love it for some one to pay me (give tickets) to watch ISU football, even if on the hillside- I assume that was a joke.

I love it!! There is nothing better than tailgating when you could be working. It turns my 3 day labor day weekend into a 4 1/2 day weekend.

You know what my favorite part is about Cyclonefanatic? All those who who just dismiss all who have an issue with anything as complainers, even when they are just trying to have a reasonable discourse on the subject. You didnt see this happen when we made the switch to thursdays (though the same issues were there), I think itd be nice to see a little respect instead of some on here who just shout down people with the 'complainer' tag.

On a side note, sure, some will have problems with no matter what time you select.. the key is finding what is best for the group as a whole, and that needs to factor in what happens when the change adversely affects those who pay the bills for the AD. I wouldnt even be opposed to having a thursday night opener every so often, but not every year, and certainly not in a year when we only have 6 home games.

Another thing i just thought of... for whoever said 'you dont have to pay $350+, just get cheaper tickets'. Im sure some did. And if they only paid 100 or 200, the AD just lost more money right there than if they lost a student season ticket holder (something they probably dont really have to worry about losing anyways)

Well, maybe if they were given to me.

But that wasn't really the point ... now was it?
Do you have a singular point?
Do not like Thursday games.
Will only watch games in JTS from worthy seats (nothing sub-par).
Will not accept discount if seats are changed.
If forced to sit in sub-par seats, prefer to watch on TV.
You prefer to use vacation and money elsewhere.

There is no problem that you feel this way. If enough people feel this way, than ISU athletics does have a problem- a fanbase that wants Big Time results without big time support.

"The idea that somebody should just settle for lesser seats is about the dumbest one out there"
What happened to:
"how judging others reasoning for not liking this or that is a pretty foolish thing to do"
"I don't recall ridiculing or putting down those who may like... very foolish to suggest that a person's individual reasoning is up for scrutiny
"
Not a big deal though- message boards are all about scrutinizing.

I guess I am not sure if you are in agreement with me or not. Pretty much the same thing. I am not tagging anyone with a "complainer" tag. All I am saying is that there is no perfect time for a game as we all have our own commitments and we all have to adjust our own time accordingly.
