Pollard announces his retirement

When JP took over in the mid 2000s I never expected he'd be an ISU lifer, especially with his ties to Wisconsin, and then his health scares.

His tenure hasn't been perfect and he's faced a lot of criticism, but it's safe to say ISU would not be where it's at had it not been for his efforts, and we likely would have been sunk in realignment.

He wasn't always the AD that we wanted, but most of the time certainly the AD we needed.

Whoever his replacement ends up being has big shoes to fill.

I really hope that is all it is, and that he sails off into retirement and has a long life. I just find it strange that he worked so hard getting Cy Town from the drawing board to the construction phase and then decided it was time to call it a career without seeing the project through. Most people would like to have that final victory lap before they go out the door and tell everyone "this is what I did for you and the university."

Iirc you also thought J Jefferson should have just toughed it out and would have been a difference maker in his condition like other athletes with way lesser injuries.

So...

It takes a village but what's the before/after image of Jack Trice stadium in 2004 and now?

While success helps the brand I also feel like he had a hand in ISU being a bit more of a 'name' in his time.

Job well done Jamie. If he wants to remain in an emeritus role with the athletic department and/or the university, he has earned that honor. If he wants to sail off into the sunset, he more than deserves the privilege. I personally am grateful for his advancement of Cyclone athletics during the most difficult period in college sports history. We aren't anywhere near this level without Jamie Pollard's leadership.

I would be highly speculative of the idea that the NDSU guy, who was last year's national AD of the year, may be the top target. He was already at NDSU, but president Cook after arriving would have worked with him for 8 years of his 12 years there. In the current iteration of college athletics you are going to want someone with a good understanding of where you are and ability to navigate change quickly. Cook knows how important that will be. There will be lots of interest in the job I would think, however. It's implied that JP would step down sooner if a hire is made and honestly that's what I expect to happen, with a new hire being announced around the beginning of 2027.

It’s been said Athletics plays a big role in general enrollment of the university.
Enrollment growth at Iowa State during Pollards tenure: 24 percent.
At University of Iowa during the same time 4 percent.
Barta didn’t leave much of a legacy.

He has hated JP for years, par for the course.
People can take issue with some of his policies, I suppose, but I don't know how anyone can be unhappy with the results. He hired the best football coach in school history, the two best basketball coaches, and we've basically been in the greatest era for Iowa State sports ever.

Yes, that's what people making a case for the university bending over to give athletics whatever it wants say. That is a vast oversimplification of the issue.

Using that logic you would also have to admit that university enrollment is about 16% off its peak "during Pollard's tenure."

Sure did, and he chose not too, never had surgery that others said he was going to need, and we lost the game. In my line of thinking if you can go out and warm up, then at least give it a try. He chose not too, it's his decision.

Which makes your speculation about JP also pretty tragic.

So just to be clear, you saw the videos of him not being able to walk when shooting around at practice but thought he should play in a game, and would make a positive difference?
