The Odyssey trailer 2 (full trailer)

Like every Nolan movie before it, The Odyssey is getting absolute raves and a few haters. I'm actually surprised there aren't more negative reviews to be honest.

Going a week from today.

I'm still pensive about this one.

"The Odyssey" just doesn't seem like a Nolan tale.

I'm still gonna go and give it a fair shot, though.

I wish it was more like say Robert Eggers.

Then I would be ALL over it.

I get why people like Eggers but he's directed himself into a very typical style. Which many directors do but I just am meh about him. His new Werewulf movie I was looking forward to, saw the trailer...hard pass.

You could definitely accuse both Nolan and Eggers of having a particular style.

I just think the source material screams Eggers way more than Nolan – and I am saying this when I consider films like Interstellar, The Dark Knight, and The Prestige some of the best films ever made.

The way I see it there are two ways you can do "The Odyssey" on film.

One is to lean into the tortured journey of a PTSD'd soldier desperately trying to return home.

The other is to recognize the whole thing can easily be read as a comedic misadventure. Funny and absurd stuff happens constantly, and Odysseus isn't nearly as clever as he thinks he is. Think of it more like a sword 'n' sandals version of Dumb and Dumber across the ancient Mediterranean.

The definitive version of the latter exists in Oh Brother, Where Art Thou.

The definitive version of the former is yet to be made.

And that version looks a lot more like...

The Witch
The Lighthouse
The Northman
Nosferatu

...than it does Oppenheimer or Inception.

I love O' Brother...so great. And agree on Prestige as well. It's my favorite Nolan film actually. I don't love all of Nolan movies, and some I just don't like at all. But he is a director that I'll be first in line to see anything he does because it's always a spectacle. I did the same for Eggers and they are all stunning visually but something about them all once I see I am just over it and am ok never seeing them again. Werewulf looks like Nosferatu 2.0.

I appreciate Nolan swings big even if it doesn't always connect.

The Dark Knight Rises and Tenet just aren't very good even if I appreciate the ambition. And I know he didn't direct them, but the Snyder DC superhero films he produced weren't very good either.

I would see the Eggers films again and you're right they're stunning visually but they're often an uncomfortable watch. The incest in The Northman, the necrophilia in Nosferatu, etc., are really creepy.

I should amend my previous statement about a good "dark" version of "The Odyssey" on film.

Cold Mountain is more or less that version. And it's good though not quite definitive.

I was lost on Tenet but gave it a re-watch and while it's unquestionably his most disjointed film IMO I have to say I appreciate it way more after more views. Still not great. But it's not as bad as people overall think. DKR has some great stuff but agree it's pretty underwhelming coming after TDK for sure.

My Nolan rankings would be:

12-Following
11-Insomnia
10-Tenet
9-Dark Knight Rises
8-Memento
7-Batman Begins
6-Interstellar
5-Oppenheimer
4-Dark Knight
3-Inception
2-Dunkirk
1-The Prestige

The top four are really close and depending on mood could be any order.

I see that a certain group of people are up in arms because Helen of Troy is being played by a black woman and that Nolan had the audacity to cast a trans actor. It's just laughably stupid that this group of people gets worked up about something so trivial, especially when neither is even close to a main character in the story. There will no doubt be review bombing by internet trolls but I hope that doesn't deter people from seeing the movie.

You could argue about the exact order.

But holy goodness that top-seven is a murderers' row.

I don't know how many other directors (Kubrick? Spielberg? Hitchcock? Scorsese?) could match it.

You could argue that he is kinda in a league of his own. He only has 12 (soon 13) films in his arsenal. Spielberg has like 35 and there are some pretty average or downright bad movies of his. Same for Scorcese. He has like 20+ but feel he has less average movies than Spielberg which makes sense...Spielberg often is a huge blockbuster director...Marty isn't. I won't comment on Kubrik. He's a visionary for sure but the only movies I think are good are Dr. Strangelove, Clockwork Orange, and Eyes Wide Shut (ducks and covers).

Nolan really doesn't have a clunker or HORRIBLE movie in all 12 of his. I don't like some of them but they aren't garbage.

Maybe not legitimate reviews but you can find all the negativity you can stomach on tik tok. The fragile ego bros are out in full force for this one.

He's definitely been more consistent than Spielberg but hasn't been going at it until he's 80. Most of Spielberg's "meh" films are later in his career. Even after the 90s he's had some great films...

Minority Report
Catch Me If You Can
Munich
Lincoln
Bridge of Spies

I would not call it "great," but I liked Ready Player One. I still wanna see The Fabelmans and Disclosure Day. Nolan still has a long way to go to match the depth of the Spielberg canon.

I consider Eyes Wide Shut a complete bomb. Way to end on a low note. Then again, who knows what Kubrick would have done to the film in postproduction, so I don't really consider it a finished product.

But his top-seven (using my own judgement here) is damn impressive...

The Killing
Spartacus
Dr. Strangelove
2001: A Space Odyssey
A Clockwork Orang
The Shining
Full Metal Jacket

I would normally agree. However, these are the same group of actors that get mad when someone plays a cuban person who isn't Cuban. John Leguizamo made a huge deal out of it. So in one sense I don't give a rip who plays who, on the other guys like him need to shut their yapper if they can be in movies where a certain race plays someone who isn't that race. He threw a fit about James Franco plaing Fidel Castro. At the same time the whole thing is really stupid. If Franco is a good actor and can play Castro, Go for it.

Apparently Samantha Morton absolutely crushes her screen time as Circe. Nolan had wanted to work for her for many years and had her in mind for the role from the beginning. During the screening overseas for cast and crew she received a long standing ovation, which Nolan said was the first time it's happened since Ledger in TDK.

I love her in everything she does and she is wildly unknown and underrated despite two Oscar noms.
