••• 2026 Official Chicago Cubs Thread •••

Cubs have to shake up the clubhouse. Plus, NLCS caliber teams need stud players in the 3-5 lineup spots. PCA is playing at that level, but he may be too valuable as lead-off guy. Otherwise, guys like Suzuki, Happ, Busch are 6/7 spot players in an NLCS caliber lineup.

Cubs are paying Suzuki & Happ $40M. I would rather pay a stud corner OF $30M and find a productive bat at $10-12M for the other corner spot. Heck, I'd be OK with Shaw in one of the corner spots if it allowed for signing an elite slugger.
That player that you're looking for doesn't come on the market for at least the next two years. Happ and Suzuki are the two best bats available in Free Agency this year and Kyle Tucker (if he opts out) and Teoscar Hernandez are the two best the year after.

***Acuna can technically be an FA after this year but there's no way he doesn't re-work his deal with Atlanta and stay.

I think Happ probably ages better than Suzuki, with his athleticism and defense, so if they're committing to a longer term deal with one of them, I think he's the better bet. Seiya seems to end up on the IL for a stretch every season, and I'm not sure he'll be playable in the field in 2-3 years.

They are both 31 years old, reaching the point where they are not going to improve stat wise, they are what they are, giving either one huge dollars and a long term deal will end up biting the cubs in the butt.

Fully agreed there. I wouldn't have an issue with giving one of them a 2-3 year deal that prices in decreasing effectiveness, but definitely not for both of them.
