Did I miss the thread or is this it? I've been waiting to see everybody's thoughts. Personally even though the dates and times haven't been disclosed I don't think we have much to be disappointed in. Home and home with KU. Arizona and BYU at home. Would have liked Houston twice and Tech not at all ( :)). I'm fairly clueless what opponents' rosters will look like and "Past performance does not guarantee future results" but the path seems favorable there for success. Could be another fun season even with the loses of key players and the addition of new untested pieces under TJ's command

According to Barttorvik here are the preseason rankings

*Creighton - 42
*Northwestern - 78
Memphis - 109
Southern Miss - 184
Southern - 343
Niagara - 308
San Diego State - 58
Tennessee - 17 or Maryland - 35
St John's - 15 or Oregon - 43 or Louisville - 10 or Texas Tech - 26
Alcorn State - 355
Purdue - 28
Iowa - 41
North Carolina Central - 357
Northern Arizona - 329
New Hampshire - 298

Iowa State 18

Opponent conferences (listing only the opener for Players Era)
American: Memphis
Sun Belt: Southern Miss
SWAC (2): Southern, Alcorn State
Metro (formerly MAAC): Niagara
Pac-12: San Diego State*
Big Ten (2): Purdue, Iowa
MEAC: NC Central
CUSA: Missouri State
Big Sky: Northern Arizona
America East: New Hampshire
* It's so weird to think of those ex-MWC as Pac

Maybe down the road, we can schedule a slightly better opponent during the post-Christmas lull. I know campus is empty during that week, so perhaps a 'neutral' court game in DSM might work in this slot without surrendering too much revenue.

I realize ISU is against the idea of neutral games vs. UNI/Drake, and I'm not all that concerned about it. But the holiday lull would make some sense for it, rotating opponent each year & playing at DSM. ISU fan attendance might be about as good as doing a low buy opponent at Hilton.

Iowa doesn't have to be involved in any way, as some sort of return to "Big 4," it could be just standalone.

The problem with that is that most years the Valley is well into league play by then. Having the league tournament a week early plus an odd number of teams means starting league play before Christmas to get everything in.

That's an aspect I didn't consider.

I'm sure plenty of elements work against such a proposition. If it was workable, it'd probably be happening already.

I also wonder if we weren't scheduling bball hard during that stretch to take away potential football bowl game travelers.
Not getting into the importance of bowls now, just a theory on that.

Interesting angle, makes perfect sense from the athletic department's view as well. Would not want to strech too thin with a higher profile bball game, potential bowl and the holiday break.

I wonder if at some point ISU will play Creighton and/or NW in an actual game, or just keep doing exhibitions.
They've been doing secret scrimmages with both for at least as long as TJ has been here because of his connections with both of their coaches. I know they announced these as two H/H opponents for public exhibitions last year, but I wonder if that will change now that Greg is no longer in Omaha.
