Chris Williams and Brent Blum react to NBA Combine results and what they might mean for former Cyclones. The CFP is set to expand. Is that a good thing for the Big 12? Diving into Cyclone history and more, courtesy of Mechdyne.

I love the Wheel of Lore. I think there are a lot of current fans in Hutchens' situation where they don't know a the history of ISU before about 2010. It's good for both young and old fans to get a little perspective on how much ISU and college athletics have changed over nearly 20 years.

On the point of everyone making more of the CFP- it’s about the access for the Big 12, not narrowing the gap

Worrying about revenue disparity is a fool’s errand at this point. Big 12 programs need access. At CFP of 12, the Big 12 will most often be a one bid conference. Member schools are suffocated out faster imo

At 24, even if P2 get twice as many berths every year, multiple Big 12 teams are in

It also helps expedite the end of the ACC, which Iowa St needs

Big 12 fans absolutely benefit, more than any other conference imo

Does CW think it's just going to be straight seeding in the 24-team CFP? I feel like he was way off on his take when it comes to G5 needing their own playoff.

The G5 isn't going to play the #1 team until later rounds. There will likely be byes and double byes, which would give G5 teams a much better chance of hosting and/or winning a CFP game.

That's worth far more than a G5 championship.

CW talked about Jacksonville State needing to compete with Alabama. When has that ever been the case? Or comparing it to the KC MLS team joining the English Premier League? That's why we have conferences. I know the rich are getting richer, but teams like Jacksonville State or even Iowa State have never had any illusions that they're competing for the national championship. Winning you conference is still the goal. Getting to the playoff now becomes more attainable. And from there, who the hell cares? Maybe you win a game and pull off an upset in the next round.

I don't see how a 24-team playoff is anything but good for the G5 and the Big 12, given the current landscape.

I don't like the general direction of college football, but we (fans, Big 12, G5) have zero say in the matter. Take what you can get.

The only way to make all of the proposed changes fit:

(2027 dates)
Aug. 28 - new week 1 (old week 0) -- 14 weeks to play 12 games
Nov. 27 - end of regular season -- no CCG
Dec. 4 - CFP round 1 (8 games) on campus [teams #9-24]
Dec. 10-11 - CFP round 2 (8 games) on campus [teams #1-8 vs R1 winners], plus somehow an exclusive window for Army-Navy
Dec. 17-18 - CFP quarterfinals at bowl sites
Jan. 1 - CFP semifinals
Jan. 10 (Mon.) - CFP NCG

G6 needs their own playoff and the wheels are in motion for that before CFP expansion.

Regardless of 16 or 24 teams, it is unacceptable for the B12 to have any type of variance in the number of AQs between conferences if there are any AQs.

And of course it’s an absolute fiasco that the P4 oversized conferences will be incapable of determining a legit conference champ starting in 2027 so the entire field will essentially be determined by a effin committee regardless if there are AQs or not.

Maybe. But I think we’d get our **** kicked in more times than not. We wouldn’t be matched up with the iowas of the conference. We’d play the #2 or 3’s of the SEC or BIG. And they’d beat the number 2 or 3 of the big 12 easily.

Like when UT kicked ASU’s ass?
The BIG champ had no issue with SEC at-large either. Blowouts happen

There is no maybe about it. It’s best to avoid being a 1 bid league. CFP expansion will do that

Or when pre season big 12 contender got beat by bottom dweller Auburn?

You’re kidding yourself if you think a single “ASU almost won” example a couple years ago will still apply in a few years.

Texas Tech and BYU will be the only ones with a consistent hope of making the final 4, maybe even the final 8.

Did you ask the G5 if they wanted a playoff? Isn't it more fun for them to compete in conference as they always have and then get a shot at the big boys? The way CW wa talking, you'd think that these smaller teams are being required to play P4 teams the whole season, and therefore, having no fun. But we see a couple G5 teams every year go undefeated or close. Wouldn't they rather be in a 24-team playoff than a G5 tournament that nobody cares about?

The G6 doesn't want a playoff, never have, never will. They like the current set up. They want access to the CFP which they're undoubtedly going to retain, might even sneak a 2nd bid some years.

Did you watch JMU get blown out by Oregon last December in a game that was relegated to TNT by ESPN due to lack of interest?

There is a consensus building within the G6 ranks (and the Feds as well) to have their own playoff and provide legit access to a national title for all G5 conference champs. Every other NCAA sport provides that access.

And far more eyeballs (including bettors) will be on three existing meaningless P4 bowl games being flipped to three G5 semifinal and final games. And if the CFP schedule is modified to NYD having 2 P4 CFP semi-final games, the G5 championship can be slotted in the early window on NYD and it will draw great ratings and provide more revenues to all G5 programs, especially when/if G5 playoff rights are pooled with all other FBS rights (assuming SBA is amended).

Berths/Access to real CFP- perception of same level, as small as it may be, is far more important. The revenue gap is going to massive regardless

Sadly , the same is going to be true for M2

They will take the CFP appearance every time over winning a G5 "national title". They aren't getting the 4 million that Oregon-JMU got on TNT going against an NFL game.

A standalone G5 championship game in the early window on NYD would pull at least 4M.

And a G5 national title and the total exposure gained from the 3 playoff games (versus no other CFB competition) would significantly exceed that of one CFP game where you likely get blown out.

And the separate G5 playoff would finally provide a clear path to a national title for all G5 conference champs, the only sport on earth that currently doesn't.

The model I've seen the B1G float is, 4 AQs for each of the P4 and 2 AQs for the 2 highest G6 teams. Then you'd have to assume that ND would be in, 95% of the time.
That get us to 19, 5 at-large teams left, mostly from the B1G and SEC?

Cut loose the schools that want to have unlimited spending. Let them have their own NFL-lite national championship.

Let everyone else reset around reasonable rules for transfer portal, NIL, coaches salary cap. Under those circumstances, we could compete for national championship.

You can keep calling it a national championship, but it's not.
