Bill Fennelly

The question I would ask as an AD is how will it be any different in 4 years. You’re always going to ask for more time for recruiting reasons.

The question I would ask the AD is this. How much money do the boosters want to pay right now to get rid of Bill and How much money would it take to buy out a coach from a winning program. Is it to much that it would effect mens basketball and Football? If so let it be. I would say in the college enviroment 10 years ago firing him would make sense. Right now it's all a money thing. We are already super short on money trying to get players and such. Trying to pay enough to keep TJ. So what makes sense. Do we want to spend money to fire bill and hire a new coach. I realize he should probably move on and all of that. However, I think he can stay one more year if it saves us money. Non Rev sports coaches are going to be harder and harder to justify firing.

I think he will coach here next season. The point I was trying to make is that recruiting is a shallow reason to sign him to an extension. The same argument will always exist unless you are willing to fire him mid-contract. It appears that we are unwilling to do that so letting his contract run out would be the next best thing.

I will also say if money is that tight, Bill is not the cheapest option we could get to coach here. We could probably get a coach for half of his salary.

No doubt he’s brought in a lot of great players. The notion he’d get to just pick his next stop is what I’m very much doubting.
True. I don’t think he’d have any problem getting a power 4 assistants job. If he wanted to be a head coach he’s going to have to start in the mid level range.

It’s starting to look like if we want an up and comer, like Molly at ASU, it won’t get much cheaper as she’s at 750k. Several on the list I wrote and others have suggested would likely come in cheaper, but the prices are going up for sure. Likely we could bring in a mid level coach at around 450k would be my guess.

I 100% think it is time for Bill to retire and time for us to hire a new coach, but it appears that Bill does not think so. I also think it will be very difficult to construct a competitive roster telling prospective transfer targets that Bill's plan is to retire after next year. I can see him trying to delay his retirement, so he can build a better roster.

In all of your humble opinions, is the mass exodus of players because Coach IS coming back for one more year, or because he is NOT coming back next year?

In my opinion, the rotation players are leaving because the team has underachieved the last two seasons and they do not see anything changing next year.

You may be already aware of this but Billy has supposedly interviewed for mid major HC jobs at the likes of Nevada, Wichita St and some HC jobs in the Valley. Has supposedly never been a finalist at any of them. With the way things are going now with the ISU WBB program, I doubt he will ever land a D1 HC gig unless he goes D2 or D3 as a HC with success and then gets back into D1.

Post-Bill, regarding reciprocal interest by Billy and D1 programs for an assistant's job remains to be seen depending on whether he and Lyndsey want to relocate and/or continue with CBB coaching.

Gonna go off the standard school of thought here…but…make WBB as cheap for the AD as possible and move resources where they get ROI.

Throwing money and resources at WBB is a luxury we can’t afford.

Yes and our defense is worst it’s been in at least 6 years. It really is a damning result for whoever those assistants are they failed the test.
Any defensive effort is going to fail when you are stuck playing 5 on 4 for many possessions because you have a player who is a great offensive player but is beyond a liability on defense.

MBB & WBB are one of the few apples to apples sports at ISU. I know it is not a Title IX issue but there would be a perception issue if your greatly defund WBB (for example do away with charter flights for WBB but maintain for MBB). That is why I think a major reduction of budget would be a image issue for the athletic department unless it became the norm across the country.

I've had a few run in's with Billy at camps when my daughter played...he came across as a legit super kind and generous dude. Like I really, really like that guy. He went out of his way to give my daughter and some friends (none of which were D1 players) a tour of the practice facility and was just so cool to them and me. Had no reason or motive to be that generous. Could tell he just loved ISU, the game and being nice.

That said, he's not a head coach at a D1 school and I think really he's an assistant at a mid major. That's still a nice living and nice life to lead. Billy will coach basketball and have a nice life no matter what because he's got a ton of experience and he's very likeable.

10:30 am CDT and Crooks hasn't left yet.
I don't see any reason for her to announce her intentions early. Her agent(s) have been contacting schools since before the season ended to gage interest. I assume she's huddled with her agents and mother to discuss what's best for her, and she'll announce her decision sometime after the portal actually opens on April 7. I'd expect her to enter with a "Do Not Contact" order since the suitors have already been culled, but she might even make visits. The ISU fans want clarity but I don't think we'll get it anytime soon. JMHO.

No real defense of Prohm but wasn’t his last year the Covid year so he didn’t really have much for non cons?
Yeah, but this was the non-con that year

home vs Arkansas Pine Bluff W 80-63
home vs South Dakota State L 71-68
away at Iowa L 105-77
home vs Jackson State W 60-45
away at Miss State L 95-56

A couple of wins against trash teams but I wouldn't have felt comfortable with teams unless they were outside of the top 275

Meh, I am not too impatient, just killing some time before I head out for the day. What will happen will happen whether I personally see it on social media this week or next week.
