Bill Fennelly

The item missing, that was brought to my attention are the difficult politics of the situation. Billy’s wife is tied heavily into the Iowa Attack and many basketball camps. Billy goes somewhere else, some of that leaves with him. The same goes for some of the other staff. In competition with the Hawks, ISU tends to lose in this state. A new coach could change that, but I am sure part of this weighs on JP mind when considering what to do.

The schools moneymaker if FB (total revenue) followed by MBB. Everything else is an expense. Beyond the dedicated fans and Alumni, others don’t pay the same level of attention. So the Athletic Dept doing much about CBF or the present situation seems low, based on politics.

No matter what happens over the next few weeks, this coaching staff and head coach will prove that they can’t keep up and took 3 years of talent that should have hosted tournament ga,es and wanted it. Took players and destroyed egos because of small mistakes. That isn’t coaching in the current decade. 20 years ago the screaming and yanking players was accepted, I don’t think a lot of it has ever been right (at any level). The teams wins together and loses together, to include the coaches. Some losses are coaches not helping the players make adjustments and be ready. That summed up this year. Players not getting prepared to execute on both sides of the ball. As fans of the game, most can see it, but because of the political situation and how the women’s team is below the two men’s, no changes and another rough year.

I have been surprised over the past five years that Billy hasn’t been more visibly central to the in game coaching.

If Bill had intended for Billy to succeed him, then he would’ve set him up better.

With many men’s teams and women’s teams, you see another coach running the timeout huddle during in game huddles and you never see this with Billy.

Well, he may be a great recruiter, Bill never gave Billy the chance to showcase his in game coaching ability. Unfortunately, this makes it such that Billy is really not a choice to become head coach after Bill retires.

It wasn’t Bill’s decision for Billy to replace him, that was ultimately going to be JP’s decision. Bill has earned the right to leave ISU on his terms but not designate his replacement.

And if Billy was going to be HC in waiting, it would have been done by now to maintain 2026 and 2027 HS recruiting which has essentially come to a halt.

I think we are in agreement.

If Billy were to have shown his ability to be a head coach that would have been made evident (including in game coaching).

I do agree with the prior poster, that Billy’s wife’s work with an Iowa Attack AAU team could have been a nice complement (recruiting) had Billy shown more visible In game coaching capabilities.

Sure – this year Iowa had a disappointing finish to their NCA tournament – but Jan Jensen was a fantastic transition to Lisa Bluder at Iowa from both a team performance and recruiting perspective. Anyone that argues otherwise doesn’t watch much Women’s Basketball over the past 10 to 15 years.

Had Billy shown in in game coaching abilities , I think there could’ve been a similar smooth transition similar to at Iowa.

Whoa - when Iowa could have probably gotten Jenny Baranczyk? You can’t even compare the two.

Jenny was hired by Oklahoma in 2031.

Yes she is great. But she wasn’t available when Bluder retired.

Iowa’s transition - planned or otherwise - was smooth and impressive.

Jenny played at Iowa…pretty sure it’s her dream job?
Iowa has flamed out very quickly when it counts the most - the NCAA tourney. Last year they were blown out at OU, and of course this year the debacle at home vs Virginia.
I would say the honeymoon is over for Jensen, especially since Baranczyk would come home if called.

I don’t disagree - but timing didn’t work out for Iowa job and now she has had great success at Oklahoma with very strong resources and compensation.

Question is — what coach has a strong Iowa State connection that would work now? It’s not Brenda as Maryland compensates her well…. Ezell? Lacey? (just dreaming on this one) as her husband is a pretty good coach :))…

Jan had a very good year this year with the team too 10 most of the year.

And no one can question her player development skills over her career (especially post players). And each of the past two years, she has brought in a top 20 national recruit to Iowa both this year and for next year. She is a very good coach (recruiting, retention, development, in game).

I wouldn’t care about any ISU connection. There wasn’t one with Fennelly after all.
BTW Ezell was 10-20 at Wyoming this year.

Agreed - unfortunately there isn’t either a great assistant to promote nor a strong Iowa State connection for the next coach. This, unfortunately means, that a smooth transition is going to be very challenging.

Bill's been incredible for this program- build him a statue. ANNND, I hope he can see that his time is up. Start fresh and 'No to Nepotism!"

What Attack players of significance have we gotten the last 10 years? We had one of the premier AAU teams in our back yard, and basically zilch from them.

More importantly, not sure about Clark’s recruitment, but she was right in our backyard and as much as we don’t like it, was generational player. Not sure if we were in the running, but that’s a player that you need to get.

So not sure the AAU stuff should mean much since we g he ave really benefited from it.
