Is it true that Manning also turned ISU down? Sure he has got a good thing going at Nebby working for Tom. But do we chalk up Brands and potentially Manning as turndowns to the ISU program?

Educated guesses are are agreeing with what you are saying today...

Ill- Hefferman (named as soon as tomorrow)
ISU- Heskett (since Te. Brands and Manning said no)
ASU- Jackson

Just because Barta said Terry Brands wasn't interested doesn't mean an offer was made and if an offer wasn't made, then he can't turn it down. I also heard on 1700 this noon that Brands might not be out of the picture completely.

I think it's safe to say that considering it's now April 27 and no hiring announcement, several coaches have turned us down. At least two, probably more.

It's not worth trying to speculate about who we have offered the job to and who has turned us down. We will never know. My personally opinion is that we turned Brands down, not the other way around- but again, everything is speculation when it comes to predicting what JP is doing.

People do realize that it has only been a week?

I think it's safe to say that nobody knows what's happening behind closed doors.

Another fun message from the mat.com...
Branch,, he would be a decent fit at ISU
If Hef misses out on Illinois and Randall gets ISU- Hef to Boise or Terry B to Boise
Zalesky at Illinois would be a GREAT FIT.
Hef should get the Illi job
What about Brian Smith to ISU???
ASU -Zeke, KJ, here again another one that Hef might fit. Would Randall consider this a step up?
Tom Ryan at ISU could be fun.
Branch to ASU.
Eric G to ASU
Joe Seay at ISU would be frickin" awesome (for a couple of years)
Borelli to Boise if Randall gets ISU, is this a lateral move?
Jim Miller ( Wartburg) to ISU
If Miller goes to ISU the Rick Caldwell to Wartburg
Jim Miller to UNI would make better sense.
Terry Brands to ISU would be the most fun to watch, the IA IAST dual would be wild.
What about Mark Johnson to ISU

Tom Brands' comments spoke a little more to the situation than Barta's. For all intent and purposes, Terry Brands turned the job down.

And yes, I also heard that Manning was given every indication that if he wanted the job it was his, and he turned down our request for formal interview.

Terry said he a Hawkeye. So I guess he wants to live and coach in his brothers shadows his whole life.

Why is it so hard to fill this job? You would think it would be a good job for any coach to get. Are they afraid of Tom Brands and Iowa wrestling.

It took Penn State 2 weeks to fill their vacancy, I would expect an announcement by the end of this week or mid next week. Until then, everything is rumor and should be given the credit that any rumor gets.

How about this?? He grew up 30 minutes east of Ames. Won 3 state titles (should have been 4). Jim Gibbons didn't think he was good enough to wrestle for ISU. Beats Terry Brands for a National Championship while wrestling for Nebraska. Asst Coach at UNL...

Jason Kelber

From the American College Connection site:
Jason Kelber can walk into any gym in the country and be instantly recognized. His connections with college coaches and ACC's online video programs give high school wrestlers a huge advantage in the recruiting process.

I think that's an element but not a determining factor. I think the "not spoken about reason" that Cael left--the financial status of our athletic department--is a factor as well.

I think Manning/Brands/Koll are in great situations and just not good fits for us. JP has been shooting for the stars but I think now he's moving on towards someone who is the right fit.

Thanks Spooner, greatly appreciated, it would have been a nice steal.

I completely understand it has been a week, but what else can we do but speculate and come up with or listen to people ideas on the new coach.

Does the financial status really matter. Wrestling would be one of the last to go at ISU. It probaly gets its share of money as well. Not many other schools are that commited to the sport.

Heh, I wrestled Jason in a tournament when we were both in the Marshalltown Wrestling Club. He got lucky and beat me 4-2 IRC:smile:

Wrestling isn't going anywhere, but let's just say there's zero room for growth right now and that's putting it nicely.

I don't think JP is shooting for the stars. He has done that before and didn't work out well. JP will get the man he wants and everyone will be happy.

FWIW, Pollard has been urged by several wrestling types to look closer at a few other candidates. To his credit, he's been receptive to that and it will push the search into late this week/early next week.

One of the names is someone I've been pushing on here but that's about all I can say.

Terry Brands, Rob Koll and Mark Manning are stars in their chosen profession. I stand by my statement.

Love it that Penn State's search is now our benchmark...PSU is at best a top 20 program; we're a top 3 program, with decades of winning tradition, and tons of talent coming back, as well as high school studs like Taylor and the Weathermans hopefully coming in.
Therefore, one would think a search for the Cyclone wrestling HC would spark a little more interest than Penn State's, but maybe it's just me...
