Interesting coincidence Johnny’s first tournament appearance at Iowa St 1985 was the year the bracket expanded from 48 to 64.

I feel like this is revisionist history IMO. Getting to one Sweet 16 in 14 years doesn’t make that school a somebody.
He was just the first guy who didn’t totally suck as a coach. But he was a .500 coach and a way below .500 coach in conference. He played a fun brand of basketball, sure.

I felt the 2013 team under Fred really got screwed out of a sweet 16. . We should have been up 5 with a 1:40 left but they called a BS charge on Clyburn, it wasn't, it was a blocking foul on Cherry Cheeks. Wiped the FG off the board and the free throw attempt. Charles Barkley in the post game even called it out and said it was a screw job. That very play caused a rule change for the next seasonJohnny Orr 14 seasons - 1 sweet 16
Tim Floyd 4 seasons - 1 sweet 16
Larry Eustachy 5 seasons - 1 elite 8
Wayne Morgan 3 seasons - 0 sweet 16
Greg McDermott 4 seasons- 0 sweet 16
Fred Hoiberg 5 seasons - 1 sweet 16
Steve Prohm 6 seasons - 1 sweet 16
TJ Otzelburger 5 seasons - 3 sweet 16
TJ is ISU’s GOAT, right?
It’s so far from revisionist history. He made our basketball relevant when it had never been. Half empty arena was turned into Hilton Magic. Made Tim Floyd want our job instead of some other teams. Was constantly promoting Iowa State basketball on the sports shows . Yeah he made it a spot talent wanted to go.
oh this again. Okay, here we go. Orr had to come in and take over a TERRIBLE program. In his 4th season he got us to the NIT tournament and his 5th to the NCAAs. His 1986 teams was 4 points from the elite 8. After he got it going, his teams made the NCAA Tournament 6 out of his last 9 seasons. Could have had another one but his star center Loren Meyer was hit by a train and had to miss the conference portion of the season. If Orr was selfish, he could have stayed on that last year and coached a team of 7 seniors that he recruited and would have undoubtedly made the tournament with that group. It is also important to consider the Big 8 that Orr had to coach in was absolutely brutal. Orr got us a lot of Big 10 schools and good non conference teams to come to Hilton and he smoked them most of the time. Also keep in mind the Burger King incident kind of derailed things for a bit. Most importantly, and this should never be down played, is Orr brought in great talent and created tons of excitement to Iowa State basketball. He created one of the best home environments in the history of the game.I feel like this is revisionist history IMO. Getting to one Sweet 16 in 14 years doesn’t make that school a somebody.

You'd better ask the AD that extended his contract while we were slding backwards that question...I'm still trying to wrap my head around Steve Prohm being here 6 years.
He had 2 NBA players on the team in the late 80s/90 and another really good player (didn’t make grades?) and the Burger King situation. They could have made a run with those three. Then he recruited the Fred class for one more run.oh this again. Okay, here we go. Orr had to come in and take over a TERRIBLE program. Otz has 11 if you count the next four games in this year's tournament.Number of NCAA tourney wins:
Orr - 3
Floyd - 4
Eustacy - 3
Morgan - 1
Hoiberg - 4
Prohm - 3
Otz - 7
Unless I'm counting wrong...
Relevant? Please expound on that. 2 winning conference records and 5 20 win seasons in 14 years makes one relevant?
Johnny has been known to say that if you go .500 at Iowa State they will fill your ******* freezer with beef.On some level like McCarney. His results weren't anything special or nationally relevant (but for a few weeks in 2002) but he got fans engaged after an extended period of suck and remained well-loved by fans

Sam Mack robbed the Burger King, a place that had his picture on the wall...…. What’s the Burger King incident?
It was a different era. It’s an era where Hayden Fry went 8-4 and 9-3 and Hawkeye fans still hate Ferentz when he goes 11-2. The big dogs back then were paying so much for players. It wasn’t like today. There is a reason he never got fired with what he did at Iowa state. He coached Michigan to the final four. He was a great coach and we just didn’t have any resources
I think TJ is still our best coach ever but a player doing something stupid shouldn’t be held against JohnnySam Mack robbed the Burger King, a place that had his picture on the wall...
I hold nothing against Our, I loved the guy. Just explaining what happened.I think TJ is still our best coach ever but a player doing something stupid shouldn’t be held against Johnny
If Jaime lets TJ go, Jaime won’t have much time left either.Keeping OTZ is literally the most important part of the ISU A.D. Puzzle.
This is the worst post I have ever seen on this site. And that is saying a lot.I feel like this is revisionist history IMO. Getting to one Sweet 16 in 14 years doesn’t make that school a somebody.

Plus, Mack was acquitted. He was not guilty of anything out of those circumstances.I think TJ is still our best coach ever but a player doing something stupid shouldn’t be held against Johnny
