Bill Fennelly

That's fascinating. Name one that could helm one as massive as ISU.

Just one.

One…. hell I’ll give you multiple. You’re gonna have to wait till I get back home to really dive, but the South Dakota St coach the North Dakota State coach and the Wisconsin Green Bay coach right off the top of my head… I’ve watched them all play quite a bit, and I would yake them over the Iowa State coach at his age and his apparent diversion to defense immediately,

Montana State also has a really terrific coach, can’t remember for sure how long they’ve been there at this point in time, but those coaches are out there….

And listen I get this is close to home for you, Bur I have been a big supporter of Iowa State women’s basketball with my eyeballs and on here… But there are 10 coaches in the Big Ten and 10 more in the SEC right now that are better coaches than BF. I would take the coach at Colorado over Fennely, probably the coach atOklahoma State obviously the coaches at Baylor, Texas, Tech, and TCU… Bill Finn at this stage of his life is Fran McCaffrey and I’m not the only person that has said that on this very board.

To some maybe...but not to everyone! Some see a guy who gives the effort of a semi-retired guy. Some see him as a coach who just doesn't mesh with today's game. Some see a guy who is living off of past success. A young, aggressive coach looks pretty good in comparison. Doesn't guarantee anything though...but what does Fennelly bring to the picture? Success from the late 90s/early 00s?

Most “pure” basketball fans sees a guy that has no interest in playing top-tier defense. And that’s enough

Im getting way ahead of myself because Bill isn’t going anywhere, but…

We have the model that works at ISU now. We need coaches who can instill the “controllables” into the team: full effort all the time. We won’t have the best talent or the highest budget (but I repeat myself). Coaches who can identify underrated players and get maximum effort out of them can have success at ISU.

We need to find that coach on the women’s side who fits within our price range.

Exactly

Only way we get a new coach is if Bill Quits. Jamie isn't going to try and find money for a buyout on womens basketball when Bill has done an Ok job. You can do an OK job on non revenue sports and be fine. It's men's basketball and Football where you have to do better than Ok.

If they cant woo Jennie Baranczyk or Mark Campbell, we could do much worse than Billy.
This makes me laugh. What does Billy do? At time outs at least you see Steyer and Schaben in the huddle with Bill and the players…Billy’s always standing outside the huddle with the managers. As if he has nothing to add.

While true, Bill only has one year left on his contract and then a 750K retention bonus at the end of next season. So, we are kinda paying a buyout either way.

What about Mark Kellogg the WV women's coach? Would he come here?
And WV hired Mark Kellogg away from Stephen F. Austin. Previously at West Texas A&M and NW Missouri St.
I’d bet every West Virginia wbb fan said “who?” when Kellogg was hired.
There are other Kelloggs out there who we don’t know about, but would be wildly successful here. It’s up to Pollard to find him/her.

This Karl Smesko thing really opened my eyes. I’ve become a pretty huge follower of Women’s Basketball. Four or five years running now, and I had no clue who he was until he showed up for the Atlanta dream and immediately made them into a very good basketball team.

We are trained to think that all these small school folks routinely move on up if they’re high-level coaches and that is obviously not true he was there for 20 years. They’re being Florida Gulf Coast… he is far, far from the only one. South Dakota State coach is a stud and he’s been there for quite a while.
