Georges Niang Traded to Memphis

Hasn't played all season due to injury, he's probably just a trade-filler and be waived by Memphis
Do you think he was actually injured or were the Jazz listing him as injured for some rostering reason? There was like no info out there on it. Seemed like the Jazz did well in this trade but not sure I know the auxiliary pieces well enough to say that for sure.

Hopefully Niang gets waived and signed somewhere decent so he can still contribute this season.

Hate to say it, but he might be done. And no shame. He carved out a longer and more productive career than I expected. Pretty sure this will count as 10 years of service to max out his pension benefit. Monte was just shy, I believe, but still should be eligible for lifelong insurance.

Of course, I hope I'm wrong. But he has so many other opportunities now.

I don't think there are any rostering issues, Jazz have a TON of players out. I think 6 players were listed out for their last game.

I honestly doubt anyone would pick him up to contribute if he does get waived. He hasn't seen NBA action in almost a year. He might be done altogether, unfortunately.

All indications is this was a legitimate metatarsal break on his left foot. We all remember his right foot metatarsal injury. I have to imagine it's a longer road to recovery.

Iowa State can use another 3 point shooter, NCAA waiver should be easy.

I was getting ready to comment about this being one more good reason to want to go to the Liberty Bowl!

Georges is an unrestricted free agent after this season (this is the final year of the three year contract he signed). As others have said he hasn't played this year and its unclear if he will return this season, but given that both Memphis and Utah are out of the playoff picture it doesn't make a lot of difference who he plays for at the end of the year if he comes back. He was included in the trade because he is an expiring contract which has financial benefits for the team getting him the trade (trade exemptions etc).

This trade really doesn't effect his career continuing. He will be looking for a team this off season either way. It feels about equally likely that he still has a couple years left in the NBA as a bench/role player or is done after this year.

While you never know about pro's, Niang has been in the rotation vs. on the end of the bench each of the past few years, so I don't see it as such a for sure that his career is done. His contract will be over at the end of the season I believe, thus he could sign anywhere at whatever is the best value ($ or situation) for both parts.

I don't think people get how good of a shooter Niang has become. For his NBA career, he is sitting at 39.9%, putting him at ~20th on the career average list for currently active NBA players! And his last 3 seasons were all at 40% or higher. He has an elite skill set that is likely still in demand.
