Its not that CMC taking another job was bad. It was that he turned all our players against Iowa St and took a bunch, which now Rogers was forced to do the same to WSU because of what CMC did, he soured the entire football team against one of the original Land Grant Universities, it was really shameful.
Kids commit to coaches not universities.

This is what gets missed in all these conversations.

There is achieving success and then there is "building something". The former is winning a bunch of games while you're here. The latter is when you legitimately leave things in a better place and set them up for sustained success after you leave. The

I would argue that the things staying behind are the result of the university, the AD, our donors, our fans, the We Will collective, etc.

At the same time - and where this gets blurry - I will give credit where credit is due with Campbell. Our program is no longer a basement dweller, laughing stock of a program due in part to the success he achieved.

I don't know how - in today's day and age - you leave for another CFB job without at least temporarily burning things down. But they happen nonetheless.

I'm in the camp of give Campbell his flowers for what he did while he was here, but let's not attribute an unwarranted amount of any future success to what he "built".

Nothing is truly "built" beyond 2-3 years in college sports anymore. Its all about the infrastructure you have built today (facilities, institutional support, revenue sharing offerings). We have better facilities, institutional support and revenue sharing offerings because of the interest in the program generated during the Campbell era and its success. Matt showed it was possible for the next guy to win at a relevant level consistently outside of blip years. Campbell never had that luxury.

not how battle lines have been drawn in the fan base, whether taking his side or JP’s.
Athletic directors have two jobs.
1. Hire good coaches
2. Do everything it takes to keep good coaches (ensure rev share, facilities, institutional support match their needs)

Pollard hired a good coach in Campbell and kept him for 10 years despite offers almost every year... but not keeping him until there's more stability in college sports could put somewhat of a damper on the end of his career if JFR doesn't pan out.

I think I'll take my autonomous flying car to the game, grab a soylent dog and an energy slurry for $495 at the concessions stand, sit down and give those guys a nice round of applause for a fun season.
I plan on watching the game from my virtual stage slash living room putting me on the field surrounded by action. Course I’ll be turning 74 during the season so it may be irrelevant.

Winning heals all wounds in sports. The hate towards Campbell will subside if the football team is successful.

Yep! Which is why people aren’t constantly staring at Fred right now because TJ is kicking ass and we aren’t watching awkward Prohm coaching……

Definitely. You see people like Fry and Ferentz who maintain a good staff for years…that’s how you win.
Fry lost the majority of his staff and was a whiny ***** in press conferences when they left. Especially when Alvarez left.

It depends on what happens here. If the ISU program somehow craters and we start winning like 2 games a year, it's not going to be a warm welcome. If Rogers has us winning 9-10 games/year, we'll 'forget' about CMC leaving pretty quickly, and thus it'll be a warmer welcome.

This fanbase has some jilted lovers. Matt Campbell stayed for 10 years despite job offers in probably 7-8 of those offseasons. He built a Cyclone football program that isn't an ever-living joke nationally. I hope our fanbase recovers from this, because right now they have no understanding of how the sport works. Campbell will probably go down as the biggest figure in Iowa State athletic history from a national prestige standpoint. (since nothing beyond FB and MBB matter)
God I hope Campbell doesn’t go down as the biggest figure in Iowa State athletic history. That means losing two conference championship games (including a blow out) is our biggest pinnacle in football. And apparently we never make a Final 4 in basketball.

I’d make a friendly wager TJ surpasses Campbell on this measure by the end of this year and he arguably already has. I promise you if a blue bloods basketball job came up he would be nobody’s 6th choice and their fan base would be f**king ecstatic to have him.

I think an option for "Too Soon to Even Consider" would be my vote. After all, Coach Jimmy "F-in" Rogers and his band of hard-nosed coaches have not even filled out the Cyclone football roster. I am focusing my attention of the new staff because the old staff is no longer here.

TJ has already passed Matty boy just because he is the greatest basketball coach in school history, and he is still coaching at Iowa State University. Matty boy won football games not championships or playoffs. Greatness needs to be met with Championships (conference or Nattys).

In our eyes maybe, but not nationally. MBB moves the needle a fraction of football.

Its the year 2040 and ISU is celebrating the 20th anniversary of the Fiesta Bowl team/win. CMC after having a solid but not spectacular career at PSU is introduced to the crowd on the jumbotron.

Considering CMC left ISU in a nearly historic shambles having taken nearly 20 of its players with him including its QB and future QB, what is his reception?
Who is Matt Campbell?

The best coach we've ever had should be met with a warm reception. I know things are raw now, but cmon

This is absurd. Should he have just never taken a job again?

Those of us who grew up in the 712 in the 80's and 90's have a hatred for Nebraska that everyone else can't understand. I know CW says otherwise, but I did not know many Hawkeye fans growing up in Western Iowa. I can literally think of one kid from my class, and it was just an old hand-me-down Rose Bowl t-shirt he wore. (It is much different now, though)

Being one of those guys, I honestly would probably cheer for Fred at any other program, maybe other than Iowa, Kansas, or a few others. Fred is head coach at Northwestern? Northwestern fan here.

Campbells situation is a little different, due to how it happened. Mr Rogers keeps winning 9 or 10 games a year, and we'll feel a lot better about it.

Fred's family is from Nebraska originally (pretty sure he was born in Nebraska), so I give him a bit of a pass there. Nebraska Basketball has also been so irrelevant for most of my life that they aren't nearly as objectionable to me as Nebraska Football.

The Penn State element of the Campbell situation is a big piece of it to me. I don't think the entire university or even the entire athletic dept. should be forever condemned for the Sandusky ordeal, but that's still too recent for me and the sanctions of it far too light for me to have any respect for that football team or anyone who voluntarily works/plays for them. They should have gotten the Death Penalty and you know programs like Iowa State definitely would have if that kind of thing happened here.

And that was the beginning of the end for him. He held onto his staff for a long time…once turnover started things went downhill.

1997 is one of my favorite Hawkeye Football seasons. So much hype, overconfidence, and arrogance especially after they beat us 63-20 (we were terrible that year), only to finish 7-5 with a loss to mighty ASU in the Sun Bowl. The next year started our five-year winning streak against them.

Alvarez left pretty early to Notre Dame Fry referred to as as a lateral move.

Snyder took a bunch of staff when he left to go to Kansas State

I thought Brashier stayed with him until the end though.

Man Fry was easily to dislike and a responsible for the ego of Iowa fans.
