Great old movies that stand the test of time

The Big Sleep, Bringing Up Baby, Only Angels Have Wings(Cary Grant, Howard Hawks dir.), To Have or Have Not(very similar to Casablanca), The Third Man(a personal favorite), Touch of Evil. I could go on and on...

I can’t really get into a lot of movies from the 50s but these are possibly my favorite 60s movies of which I do like many. (80s child myself)

Lawrence of Arabia (color)
Spartacus (color)
A Hard Day’s Night (b&w)
La Dolce Vita (b&w)

Not sure I’d love A Hard Day’s Night if I wasn’t a Beatles fan but since I am I think it’s so fun.

Please do. I Own Casablanca and am always looking for similar quality content.

How old does the movie have to be?

He said pre 70s and to me that is the perfect “modern” line for films more than music where I think a lot of 60s music feels more modern than 60s films.

Rear Window - 1954 - (Jimmy Stewart & Grace Kelly) is one of my all time favorites! This is a psychological thriller (murder "mystery") without blood or gore - just great acting and excellent filming. I have seen a number of Alfred Hitchcock films, and this is still my favorite! BTW, I took Theater 106 at ISU (late 80s) and was introduced to this film by the instructors (there were two of them - don't remember their names) of the class. In fact, they also introduced me to Singin' in the Rain (another great film). Lastly, almost any film that Jimmy Stewart starred in holds up well - he is just THAT GOOD of an actor!

Shoot. I was gonna say 'Deep Throat' but that was a 1972 film.

RAIN. (1932)

Joan Crawford is OUTSTANDING in this. Just outstanding.

La Jetée (1962) About time travel. Superbly done, and the heart-stopping moment when the woman in the story told by still photos, opens her eyes live action. Not sure I've seen anything more artfully done in a film.

The Enchanted Cottage (1945)...watch for free on Tubi or Roku. Better yet, watch it with the person you love best because the whole movie is about how love is blind.

Here's the trailer...

For comedy I'll say, It's a Mad Mad Mad Mad World.
Also, Dr Strangelove.

For more serious, I liked:

From Here to Eternity.
All About Eve
Marty

An interesting one I have on the recorder I haven't seen in a while. 36 Hours, starring James Garner. Premise: He's a diplomat during WWII. Captured by the Germans who convince him he's been in a coma and the war is over, to have him talk freely about war plans.
