2025-2026 MBB computer projections thread

Always lose early? They've made two Sweet Sixteens in 4 seasons and the other two had injuries (last season) or a super streaky feast or famine group in '23.

Are these same people raving about Creighton and Tech's runs that are general outliers? They've had several early exits or not even making the tournament.

Should we prefer ISU not even make the tourney like in '23 for Tech?

Tech Seasons

Creighton seasons
I'm even going back to the prohm days and hoiberg days. Yeah, S16 runs, but some of these like last year you place higher expectations on a team, and then they have a letdown exit.
Last year's Otz team (yes I know some bad luck)? 1st team Prohm inherited? Hoiberg's team playing UAB letdown?

These are the situations I'm referring to where they could have gone a round or 2 further and consensus crowd, including bracketologists and analysts had them going further as dark horse picks or favorites, only for them to not do well.

The first S16 under Otz wasn't expected. That team exceeded it's ceiling as Otz got more out of it than we expected.

Most of this is perception, and since most fans don't care about any other team, they don't notice that all these other programs are having the same types of experiences, often even worse. The tournament is all about being there often with capable teams. Eventually you should catch lightning in a bottle and get hot, or get the right matchups.
Bingo, which is what I'm referring to. As a program, overall success has been nice, but I'm talking about these let down games, team not showing up or being ready, slow starts. Do they happen? Yes, that's college basketball. But dang, some of these programs are what you said in a better worded way, catch lightning in a bottle. I'm just ready for the ball to bounce ISU's way for once on seeding, matchups, and we are talking an Elite 8 or Final Four game.

A lot to unpack here but do you go by bracketologists? And why?

Somebody playing Michigan needs to put some points on the board against them to knock their defensive rating down...
All the higher rated offensive teams in the Big Ten don't show up until way late on Michigan's schedule. They're likely to keep that #1 defense rating through late January.

I think I looked last year and we were up there with Tennessee and BYU for having the most tournament games and zero Final 4s. Its getting to be a major problem.
It's frustrating but I dont know why anyone would characterize it as a "major problem". Nebraska has major problems with their tournament record. Iowa has major problems with their tournament record. Iowa State is a lot better off than many other schools.

I would say its starting to become glaring that for as much success as we've had and as much we're still a basketball-first school (as much as football pays the bills) we've not had an elite 8 in 25 years. Plenty of teams worse than our teams that missed out have been to that level.

Its a different kind of 'major problem' than the kind you're listing, but still pretty big at that and a step the program needs to take to get to the next level.

Agree to disagree. Its not something that is systemic with ISU, its just been bad luck that its occurred over multiple coaching staffs at the school. Now if we are in year 10 of TJs coaching career and we still haven't made some kind of deep run then maybe we can talk. Until then I don't agree at all.

These rankings adjust for the quality of the opposing offense. You move up or down based on how you play relative to the models’ expectations not on absolute figures.

Cmon man, try to keep up. I dont think its too much to ask for a Final 4 at least once considering all the bad programs that have made it in the last 40 years.

We've also been a Top 12 seed 3 times now and flamed out early. It's a problem.

So if they had one FF even like 25-30 years ago, it's not a problem?

Or did they need many?

Just trying to keep up. TIA.

Not a major problem for me personally. As long as we're getting the talent and competing in the upper echelon for conference championships and tourney titles...getting good seeds for the NCAA tournament...being there enough times...when winning becomes expected...elite 8s and final fours will come.

Are we really competing for conference championships though ? Last year we finished 6 games behind Houston, the year before that 2 games behind. Besides that we haven't been close since 2001 team.

Fred and Prohm were never really close because Kansas would dominate while we'd lose aome random game against the worst team in the conference.

It's becoming a major problem for me when you have random programs like VCU and South Carolina making it.

Im holding my breath on this year too, we've seen this exact same story play out numerous times and it all ends the same. 30-3 and rewarded by playing MSU in Detroit, Niangs foot, frosted tips, Steve Prohm ineptness, Gilbert deciding a week before the tournament he doesn't want to play anymore......

I can't speak for everyone, but id be willing to bet a majority of people would satisfied with one on their life.

Im a Cubs fan and am grateful for 2016 and will never take that for granted or expect that I'll ever see that again.

Yeah, I get it...we need things to go our way for a change...

I don't say this often. But maybe you should just consider becoming a Duke or UCONN fan.
