Iowa High School BEDS count 24-25

It’s no guarantee you’d be an excellent player in 3 sports at any level. Being a starter isn’t any guarantee of having fun either.

Honestly I didn’t plan that far ahead. Moved to Ankeny because it was between DSM and Ames. My kids have had a ton of fun with sports.

I myself wasn’t an athlete. I’ve played way more sports after high school than before. Most fun I’ve had playing basketball was last winter when I was 43.
Funnest times I had in school wasn’t in sports. It was in band. My dad loved it. For six years, he didn’t have to purchase a student activity ticket for me, because playing drums was my ticket. Plus, we had a cool band instructor. We even got away with subtlety changing our school fight song from playing On Wisconsin to the Budweiser theme.Still played both, but Budweiser more so. Same arrangement as St.Louis Cardinals when Augie Busch would get hauled in during World Series. Couldn’t do that now. You had all the people on their feet when we started playing that.

Pella is going Raccoon River with Van Meter i’ve heard.
Saw that Pella school board voted unanimously to join Raccoon River conference. Bylaws says they have to give Little Hawkeye 2 years notice so right now the move will happen in 2027-28.

I didn’t see that coming. Wonder if Pella Christian will find a new home too.

Same here, between the little Hawkeye and racoon river I always assumed it would be the little Hawkeye that would eventually destabilize the raccoon river. Wonder what made them jump cuz the little Hawkeye seemed perfect for them and it's a little odd geographic wise in the raccoon river. A lot of questions for Newton, Pella Christian and Oskaloosa id say.

As far as van meter goes I heard they aren't quite ready to make that big of jump yet, they tried to get into the heart of Iowa but HOI said no, I'm guessing they will decide to make the jump but right now they are still on that 2A fringe and are accomplishing every thing they want to in there current conference.

My guess is Pella Christian will try and get into the HOI and have a close neighbor in PCM, also heard Pleasantville is trying to get into the HOI as well and would be another close neighbor for Pella Christian and PCM

Oskaloosa is already in the process of trying to find a new home. I assumed they wanted out because, well Pella.

Southeast conference? I wouldn't think following Pella would make much sense but who knows I guess

They talk about finding a new home every year. There doesn't really seem to be any options.

I would say theyre more likely to stay now that Pella is gone. Osky can’t beat Pella in any sport.

Why is Pella leaving the Little Hawkeye?
mainly because the size of the new schools. bunch of big ones and a few small ones, few that are similar to pella. going to racoon will allow all of them to be about the same size.

also scheduling non-varsity is a pain, since all the des moines area schools still buddy up with the ciml schools for scheduling.

I would guess newton osky and pc leave as well.

Is Pella not growing? Sounds like they want to be the "big" school in a smaller conference.

Pella is growing, but they have had some financial issues lately and I think enrollment might be going down a little.

PC at one time wanted in the SCC, but the SCC said no.
The core of the SCC has always been built around the triangle of Albia, Centerville and Bloomfield, 3 schools roughly the same size with strong rivals between each of them. Chariton and Eddyville have developed into the fourth and five schools in the group. All are roughly the same size, easy drive time from each other.

Other schools have come and gone as they have grown or shrank like Winterset, Knoxville, PCM. Ocseola has always been stuck out by itself with no where to go, so they stick with the conference. Cardinal joined a few years ago, have no clue why, outside of softball they just cannot compete. Schools to the east and west are too small to join the SCC and the schools to the north are too large.

Teams like Knoxville got out of the Little Hawkeye to avoid teams like Pella Christian, that’s what I was told.
I apologize to the people of Knoxville but that's a losers mentality, they are 15 mins away and a class smaller than you, buck up a little bit, my goodness

The SCC has had a weird history. In the 1970s it was Pella, Oskaloosa and most of the current teams except EBF and Cardinal. Then didn’t it disband? And then reformed? You are exactly right, Albia, Centerville and Bloomfield always formed the core. I’ve heard Cardinal joined because of travel in the SEISC, but I don’t think the SCC solved that for them. SCC always seemed to me a place for county seat schools in southern Iowa coal mining country. Pella Christian is kinda the orphan in the area schools looking for conferences.

Best guess is Norwalk/indianola/dcg/ames now accept the CIML invite from last year to be in CIML ‘small school’ division and state places osky, newton, dmc, pc in new conferences. Goodbye Little Hawkeye.
