Iowa High School BEDS count 24-25

I would be surprised that Iowa Star would want North Butler, they are about twice the size of almost everyone in that conference.

And in reality those 3 schools moving to North Central Conf are too big for Top of Iowa really. The move puts them in a conference more in line with their size. And equalizes the size of schools in the Top of Iowa, better.
I agree. I had just heard that North Butler board was potentially going to vote on it. As you said, doubt they would get approved though to join the Iowa Star. And not sure why they would want to. They seem to be a in a pretty level playing field at the moment.

Eagle grove has always been the bad apple. Complained since joining. They decided to go back and FC and Garner agreed and are using the excuse they wanted more JJV games. Well, it will be those 3 and St Ed’s, clarion, and Hampton on one side. Eagle grove and clarion struggle even fielding teams quite often so that doesn’t make sense.

North Butler, I’m not sure about. Asked a HS coach they said they are ditching east/west and doing one conference. That’s what I know so far. With my youngest a Senior, it doesn’t affect me.

EDIT: Rockford left to the Iowa star, that may be who you are thinking of.
Ditching the east west isn't horrible I guess. Not 100% sure on North Butler either. Seems like there wouldn't be much to gain and leaving behind the old corn bowl mates on top of it. Also would the Iowa Star approve them even? Rockford might have been the one. They seem to be a good fit.

WE at least has a functional boys BB program. Baseball has been not very good, but not completely terrible.

If you want to see catastrophic collapse, it’s the DM metros.

Most glaring example is girls BB. I think it was 2011 or 2012 DM East was undefeated state champs. I think they’ve won 2 games in 5 years. Only 2-3 years ago Roosevelt and North were pretty good teams. Now all the metro teams probably can only win against each other.
A lot of kids are less interested in building their life around any sport, or even sports in general. Add in the parents that can't afford it even if the kids are willing and the landscape is miles away from what it used to be. The rich districts have inherent advantages that have only become more obvious.

In the DM metro kids can just open enroll to the suburban schools if they are good. As long as they plan it out it just means one semester of no varsity.

Not sure if Waterloo kids open enroll to CF or go to Don Bosco.

Off the top of my head I can't think of too many Waterloo kids that have open enrolled for the sake of sports. There was a kid from East who went to CF for his senior year and was their leading rusher either last year or the year before but that's about it. Bosco is the defacto school for the rural kids east of Waterloo who live in the East High district (Raymond, Gilbertville or Elk Run).

Bosco gets all the wrestlers as well.
I work with a guy who has a 1st grader at Bosco. He lives over in Raymond so it sort of makes sense to send your kid there. I joked with him about his kid needing to win a wrestle-off to get admitted. He's one of those guys who doesn't understand sarcasm so he was like no my son has a heart condition and can't wrestle.

I can tell you work with engineers...

So he's going to be the wrestling manager?

Who ever said North Butler was looking at leaving was right. Just read something that said they are going to be sticking around another year since they missed the deadline.

Probably mentioned this before but my cousin said there was an A through I team for basketball while his boy was a middle school student at Johnston.
Marshalltown when I grew up had 2 middle schools 6-8 grade. We had A-F in one and A-D in the other which combined would put us at A-J. This would have been '01-'03.

They have since pulled all 5th out of elementary school so it's 5-6 all in one school and all 7-8 in another.

Yeah, I guess I don't get the benefit of moving too much personally for NB. I also was told the Nashua Plainfield was looking at doing the same thing. They would also be in the same boat. Also will the Iowa Star allow them in?

I’m Kids 8th grade basketball has 45 kids out and they are only going to have 3 teams. Figure they will have 10 each on A and B so 25 kids on the C team? Makes me want to rent gym time and form 3 teams.

45? That’s light work. Almost 80 were out last year for just south side Ankeny 8th grade.

With those numbers it has to be depressing for that kid that just loves bb and is never going to see the floor.

We talk a lot about how you play because it’s fun and you get to be on a team with your classmates.

My oldest who is in 9th now will probably never play. He was a starter on the C team last year. Probably like the 25th best player in his class. He’ll end up taller than some kids and he’s got a good shot but it’s probably his 3rd/4th favorite sport.

There is a good chance he doesn’t play varsity for any sport. If that’s the case that’s okay. You gotta be pretty good.

There is a kid who is going to be a senior this year who is 7 foot tall who has basically not played at all. Pretty slight but also pretty skilled and is a good athlete. I’ve played against him in my pickup games and somebody that tall on the other team is just mind blowing. At Boone in the 90s that kid would have played every minute of every game.

One of the main reason I never would of put my kids in a large school. Both my kids are/were 3 sport varsity athletes, excelled in every one. At a larger school...might of been a 1 sport varsity athlete and would of had a fraction of the fun and life experience.

Any school larger than 2A is an absolute no go in my book.

It’s no guarantee you’d be an excellent player in 3 sports at any level. Being a starter isn’t any guarantee of having fun either.

Honestly I didn’t plan that far ahead. Moved to Ankeny because it was between DSM and Ames. My kids have had a ton of fun with sports.

I myself wasn’t an athlete. I’ve played way more sports after high school than before. Most fun I’ve had playing basketball was last winter when I was 43.

I am surprised that more kids that do not get playing time but love the sport do not open enroll out to a smaller school to get some playing time, but they don't. I guess they want to be with their friends and the academic opportunities at the larger schools.
