ISU Bowl Projection

Years ago it used to be a big deal how much the bowl payout was. Usually the closer to January 1 the game was, the more prestigious the bowl and the larger the payout.

Does the money even matter anymore? Location seems to matter more to many fans.

I am not complaining about anyone's post in the thread, and Phoenix does sound more attractive than many other locations, but I guess the game itself does not matter very much in the CFP era. Maybe dump all bowls and expand the playoffs to 24 like FCS.

Bowls don’t matter anymore truthfully. The only part that helps is the extra practices. When you think about that, the better teams get more practices…….you’d think the teams that went 1-11 or so could probably use some more. With bowls being an after thought with the playoffs, maybe just allow everyone X amount of extra practices and give bowl/playoff teams a couple more for game prep.

We will not be in Memphis

I would argue that bowls do matter for perception of the team. Our win over Miami last year helped elevate the program to the 15th ranking in the final poll. Losing that game, we probably drop out of the final poll and finish unranked, at the very least we would have finished around 20-25.

With the wide receiver production we lost from last year, we would have definitely started this season unranked. Unfortunately, this season played out how it did and we were not able to take advantage of the 22nd ranking starting point, but bowls are massively important for the perception. Especially so for a conference that is constantly fighting perception issues.

When you have a bunch of players sitting out and the supposedly top 10 to 12 teams in their own grouping. People I talk to say they don’t care about the bowls that much anymore outside the team that they support.

The money has not mattered for a long time. All the net bowl money goes to the conference and is split equally among the conference teams.

What does matter in terms of payout is that net component. Each traveling bowl team has a budget. The better the bowl payout, the higher the budget which allows the team to do things like take the band, take lots of family and administration, and give the players better swag bags.

It is WILD to me that BYU is getting ZERO respect for the CFP...

I'll be a huge BYU fan on Saturday so that the Big 12 can get two in the CFP. I'll also be cheering for UGA over Bama in the $EC game
Do we want Tech with a bye, or 2 teams in the playoff? Generally I would be for 2 teams in, but this year I think we want to have Tech automatically in the quarterfinals.

Getting 2 in: The down steam impact to our bowl game is meaningless to me as the bowl games are just that, mostly meaningless.

I've been wondering about that the past couple of weeks.

I assume CFP payout helps the conference (not sure how financial aspect works??).

Beyond that and any positioning for bowls, seems like 2 options.

1: Tech wins XII title, gets a 4 seed and bye, could maximize chance to advance at least to semifinal. No guarantee.
2: BYU wins XII title, both get in, but TT drops maybe to 7 or 8 seed, BYU gets in as 11 (with G4 as the 12), has to play road game in opening round.

Good point on payout, does 2 in get ISU Millions?

I watch most Bowl games but also I'm a CFB nut/fanatic. I watch most Conferences/Division Levels. I also realize while I'm watching the Bowl games to not take much away from them. There good to have on during the Holidays and also they are the last batch of games we get from Mid-January to late August. LONG wait till the pigskin gets kicked off again.

I like Bowl games as it gives me something to watch during the holiday period. I think they still matter to a lot of the smaller teams and players who will never get to the CFP. Expanding the playoff will do absolutely nothing for most of the G5 schools unless they make it more like the NCAA tournament and allow all conferences a spot. That'll never happen though. It'll only be filled with more B1G and SEC schools with the addition of 1-2 from the the likes of the BIG12 and so on.

I thought seeds 5-8 have home games against seeds 9-12?

Also, didn't all 4 teams with a bye last year end up losing their first playoff game? I don't think the bye is as much of an advantage as you're making it out to be. I'll be rooting for BYU & both to get in.

If the committee puts Bama in with a "close loss" in the champ game but keeps BYU out with a loss **** will hit the fan.
BYU’s not going to jump anyone if they lose. They’re not going to get an at-large.

They should be ranked above ND, but they aren’t and haven’t been. It’s not worth having a meltdown about at this point. It’s just a reality.

If BYU is ranked behind Alabama tonight (they will be) I'm not sure how you can expect them to jump over Alabama after losing.

That won’t happen this year. The top four seeds are going to be Ohio State, Indiana, Georgia, and either Texas Tech or Alabama. One of those five teams is going to win the national championship. The team with the best chance outside that group might actually be Notre Dame.

Calling my shot, Bama & BYU over ND tonight in the rankings
If the committee didn't put BYU over Bama last week after BYU won a road game at Cinci and Bama beat a G5, they wont do it this week after BYU won at home against Mid-Florida and Bama won on the road against Auburn.
