Further proof that “slam dunk” hires often don’t work either. It’s a crapshoot.

Yep, it makes so little sense even for the big dogs to spend so much on the flashy hires and paying buyouts to other schools. Seems like the best option is to go grab some up and coming g5 coach or p5 coordinator at a lower rate, put the extra into NIL, and re-roll for a new coach in 4 years if it doesn't work out.

That’s the way to do it, but boosters must not see it that way.

Yeah I posted a week or two back that the 247 Wisky beat writer was on kxno and he thought that Fickell would be back.
Man they must really be hurting for money then, you just are giving up on another season which will cost millions in donation/fan support. Hope their math checks out.

I just assumed it would happen at the end of the year when they finally gather enough moola

They've also got a killer schedule next year (Notre Dame, Pitt, at Iowa, at Penn State, USC, at UCLA). They may be letting him take the bullets so the new guy has an easier road in 2027 (Pitt in Dublin, as USC, Penn State).

Memphis coaches don't really have a great history at their next gig
