I do some incredibly sporadic and random photography outside of my regular work, but am pretty well only doing it for myself and contests.

I had a tiny side business for a very brief while that Janny thought I should call "Decent Exposure." I enjoyed the pun, but didn't think it was super complimentary. So, when I decided to just start this website just for fun, I grabbed this URL. Mostly to make both of us laugh!
Posted this in the birding thread but repeating it here with some photo talk. I took my new mirrorless Nikon out for the first time after playing around with the settings at home some. Still have work to do on the setup, work in progress as they no longer give you a real manual. Hadn't taken any photos at all with it before running out to a nature center this afternoon. I came back impressed with how fast it focuses. My old Nikon 200-500mm was a decent all purpose wildlife lens for a hobbyist but, man, it was not the fastest focusing. Think I am going to like this new Z and the 180-600mm. Didn't really experiment much with the auto "subject" focusing that is supposed to find a birds eye. Just used spot focus today.
The bird is a Spotted Towhee and is a bit uncommon for Minnesota, hence my short road trip over to see it. It's a western bird and getting lots of attention locally here in the Twin Cities area.

That's lovely - he's very pretty!! I got a Canon mirrorless for Christmas last year and love the same thing about it - it's light and fast.
Well, mine isn't a light setup at 7.8 pounds. Just weighed it to compare to old camera and lens and it was also 7.8 pounds. So the weight is no difference for my new gear. The over the shoulder Black Rapid strap I have is really pretty good for lugging it around. Although not light, it is pretty well balanced in my opinion. And the vibration reduction really helps with handholding it, which Is 99% of my shooting.
Not to self: Keep going to gym and lifting weights so your old man body can hold this weight steady.
I see great potential young Padawan. I like your St. Johns Cooridor photo. Wonderful light, strong emotion and story.

Having been a judge for this competition, this award has great honor - first as it's was personally selected out of all the photos submitted, and because Diane, RIP, had such a huge passion of photography that it's so cool to see your photo carry on her legacy!
You just made my day - thank you!! It is so weird to put anything out in the world, and I can’t call anything I do “art” when there are so many incredible artists out there - I would love to see your work!
All I have gotten before is just a couple of honorable mentions, so this was such a true shock and honor. I can only imagine how fun but intense judging is - that is so incredibly cool that you did that!

Recently got back for a trip to Yellowstone and the Tetons. Here' a few pics form the Tetons. Just used my Galaxy S25 but this is one of the few times I wished I had a good camera. The colors were breathtaking.
