Beer sales at JTS after all?

When alcohol sales were approved at all university system athletic venues last fall, athletic director Troy Dannen estimated revenue could reach $3-4 million per game at Memorial Stadium.

The amount of sales so far is much lower, right around $500,000 per contest.
That's going to end up $3.5M+. Even if they *only* make 25% of that in profit, that's $875k that they didn't have before and more likely $1.5Mish.

They think they will lose money doing it because people pay $999 a piece for Sukup. Again, I’m just relaying the message.
Then try it for a season and see if they do. Hell they could announce the stadium wide sale of alcohol after the date to purchase season tickets and see how many people call in to complain. I tend to believer looking at this from the outside that the people in charge do not want to allow the general fans to purchase alcohol and they think they will lose money with people switching to regular seats is just an excuse.
Do other stadiums that now sale alcohol see a large drop off from the premium areas after starting general sales? This idea that the only reason people are purchasing tickets in the Sukup area is to purchase alcohol and not the better food, restrooms and being able to get out of the weather is really silly. Alcohol is a perk, just like the other things you get in the area, not the one that causes people to say, screw the rest of the stuff I used to have, because now I can get alcohol any place in the stadium.

It’s not easy to just add selling alcohol. They’re only going do all the legwork if they think it is worth it and they obviously don’t believe it is.

BS, if they wanted to do it after the Arizona game they could have announce they were going to start selling during the BYU game, that would have given them a month to get everything set up. If a month is not enough time, announce it next season in the spring after the time to renew season tickets is over.
It's just one excuse here after another, people will not purchase tickets in the Sukup area, now it's not enough time. Alcohol is already being delivered to the Sukup area and the other suites, they do not have to sell it in the main concession stands, set up little. booths around the stadium. The bottom line is those in power do not want to do it. It's their choice, but then stop begging for more money when you have a way to raise it and refuse to do it.

University of Cincinnati had a simple setup. They had three large coolers in an area with a variety of alcoholic drinks. Seemed like more expensive stuff. You entered the area and picked your drinks out of the coolers. Then they had two self pay stations. Each station had a person opening the cans, checking IDs, and helping if someone had an issue paying. It was pretty quick and consistently busy. Everything seemed to be 16 oz cans. They also had some water and pop in bottles. I saw another area where beer was on ice. Neither location had food.
Given many venues are cashless, like Crypto and Sofi, there are venues where you scan you credit card going into the room with beer coolers. There are also snacks as well

You grab what you want and then just walk out.
You card will be charged based on you selections. No additional scanning or anything.

Takes like 2 minutes to get a beer.

Ok what if they only sold "Ames Lager"?

Like the entire stadium gets "Ames Lager" only, which would basically double dip on the "revenue". Then only the club sections get a variety of drinks and beer to keep that as a perk for those in the Clubs.

Or at least only sell the ISU branded drinks/beer in the stadium.

1. There is no way West-O could produce enough for a 7 game football season
2. You're underestimating how many beer drinking football fans are brand loyal and you would probably leave more money on the table by not being affiliated with Molson Coors or Anheuser Busch

The $2M in beer sales but only 400k in revenue is not about the 400k. It's how can we get more out of that $2M our fans would be willing to spend. The percentage of revenue is the biggest draw back from not selling beer.

Oh I know, It was more of a theory than anything. But then again I said it could be all Iowa State branded drinks. I know there are quite a few so it would not be just on West O.

That being said if they only sell said beer, those loyal people either can drink it or go without. Its like going to McDs and saying you only drink Pepsi, you drink what they have or nothing. Of course you would have to stop the leaving and re-entering too.

Some were sold off to Mega Mart or something like that so not all Kum and Go locations will be Maverick - most, but not all.
I would imagine Maverik will be pretty much just like Kum & Go, but don't know that for sure, have never been in one yet.

What might gain my interest is if the gas will be of a higher quality, 1st tier, like Conoco, Shell. Exxon, etc., or even 2nd tier. I never considered Kum & Go gas to be worth stopping for. Maybe Maverik gas will be better?

Anyway, I did some research on top tier gas. Here is the Reader's Digest version (2 links), as to which staions have good, top tier, or even 2nd tier gas:

Personally, I think many of the lesser 'brand name" gas stations tend to have lesser quality gas, not just the additves or lack thereof, but with more water content, from when refineries clean their tanks. [That appears to not always be the case.] Who gets those 1st tankers of gas after the cleaning, what is the price, etc., e.g., the lesser staions? That's what I've been told some time ago by a mechanic, not sure of the accuracy. It's funny how you hang onto bits of information, some can be true, some false.

Edit: sorry for the gas hijack, back to beer basics 201.

Wonder if they'd ever implement a license like you have to pay xxx amount to buy booze as if you were a premium fan ect.

No one has said it will lose money. No one.

They have said the headache isn’t worth the estimated $400k.

When one is looking at a $20m deficit $400k is still $400k.

I think we would make some money. They think we would lose some money. I will say it’s hard to question Pollard when it comes to financial decisions. I do know they aren’t going to sell it and then take it away. Way too much work involved to not keep it.

Long story short if you want beer sales I totally get it but we’re not going to just do it for financial reasons.

I can't imagine that almost every stadium in the country sells alcohol except ISU if it wasn't worth it. Kinda no brainer that it would net revenue after expenses otherwise everyone else wouldn't be doing it.

They literally added it for one day last summer for the George Strait concert... Could have been better implemented, but we were drinking in the cheap seats.

I do actually think we are pretty unique with our situation but yeah ultimately I think the “everyone else is doing it” part will be the driving factor for us to do it as well.
