Iowa State #16 in AP Preseason Top 25 Poll

Seems high with (i) who we lost, (ii) how many new guys we have, (iii) how many of them are fresh out of high school, and (iv) how many of them are unproven at the major-conference level, but maybe many other teams on this list are in that same situation too. It shows what voters think of our core (Tamin/JJ/Milan) and it's a great show of respect and reputation for TJ and the program. We are lucky to have a coach like him.

Wow. With that schedule we need good health, particularly from Tamin and for Milan to turn into Dirk like we'd all hoped.

Seems right given how our current situation seems like we're a 20-35 type of team even without a lot of talent in TJ's early years or with a ton of injuries.

Interesting that BYU is getting more credit this season for getting every single player they'd possibly want where last year they didn't really.

Interesting the SEC isn't more represented given last year.

Big 12: 6/16 (38%)
SEC: 6/16 (38%)
-----
Big Ten: 6/18 (33%)
-----
Big East 3/11 (27%)
----
ACC 3/18 (17%)
----
Gonzaga

Do we have room in the trophy case?

I don't know, I think 16 is dead on

Yeah I'd have expected 7/16 or 8/16 teams ranked...not even knowing a lot of specifics about their middle tier.

I'll admit I have no idea how kenpom comes up with pre-season ratings.

He has BYU at #18, quite a bit below the AP voters. I hope Dybanstra is a bust and they suck, they're annoying and so are their fans, but I'm a big homer of course.

Thanks for this detailed and compelling insight.
Sorry I didn't have a full article ready for you. I guess I could've talked in a circle like you. You had the answer, just didn't have the balls to say it: Every team in the portal era is replacing a ton of guys. We have legitimate experienced stars coming back and more than most teams. 16 isn't a particularly high ranking.

I think it's easy to forget that Iowa State is towards the high end of retention in this new environment. Returning a trio of Lipsey, Jefferson, and Momcilovic is about as good as any team (and can add Heise in there for a fourth major contributor returning).

In Barttorvik's projections (which have Iowa State at #15), there are only 4 teams in the top 50 that are returning over 50% of their minutes from last season (!!), and Iowa State is one of those.

Yeah, I really don't get how certain formulas try to rank incoming talent but then a program like BYU buys absolutely every player they want and they aren't rewarded for it. With human voters too. Last year seems like BYU wasn't given cred for that, this year seems like they are.

Part of me hates BYU in hoops and Tech in fball buying their dream team every year, but another part of me is thinks it's kind of essential for Big 12 to be considered relevant long term. Even if ISU can't buy that team, if Big 12 teams consistently beat that talent it shows something.

I can appreciate the respect the program is getting, but just like football, let's see where things are at least half way through the season including some conference games.

How a team consistently functions on the road plays into it and we really don't know that until conference season with a bunch of road games.

Between cyclone fb, bb and following Pacers to game 7 I just assume absolute injury decimation is guaranteed.
