I do think a lot of the best "local" places around entire midwest/west are in the ballpark of what they call Chicago tavern style. And the major US chains are nothing like it.
In all fairness to Altoona, I think this was one particular place that sold it. My closest friend is from there and never actually tried it.Any pizza style is acceptable

Also, it is a weird town in some ways. People run pseudo restaurants out of their houses.
And…surely there are people here old enough to remember the before times, when we didn’t have pizza in most of the state. As a kid I was told many of the initial attempts were similar abominations.
Had a slice of the lasagna pizza from Taste of New York the other day. Pretty damn good.
What was the really popular Mexican restaurant that was just in somebody’s house in the 80s? Not positive it was Altoona but I know my parents took me to it after a day at Adventureland. Could’ve been anywhere in Des Moines. It was packed, definitely popular.

Daughter was in Napoli, Italy this past summer and ate at the little place that supposedly was the first to serve pizza in the early 1800s. She said it was the best pizza she's ever had, just had cheese, basil and olive oil. She said it was ridiculous how much flavor it had.

While I love Detroit style (living here) and Quad City style (growing up there), I was born an Italian from New York - and New York style pizza just means something extra to me.
Wow I had no clue. That monstrosity seems like something Iowans would dream up. Glad it's not on us.

Detroit style is growing in popularity now because it reminds older generations of Pizza Hut pan style before it became totally toxic. Also probably the best pizza people can make at home with a typical oven and a cast iron pan. You don't need to buy special ovens or cooking surfaces.
