Chris Williams & Brent Blum react to all of the happenings from this weekend in Big 12 football. Texas Tech made a statement in Utah. The guys discuss why it’s good for the league if the Red Raiders stay hot. Plus, Mike Gundy’s downfall continues. What should Oklahoma State do about it? Some hits on Iowa State / Arizona, plus guessing the point spreads, all courtesy of Mechdyne.

Enjoy!

Agree it’s best that Tech’s infamous spending leads them to a great record. The Big 12 needs less parity and Tech reaching the title game is probably the best way to get two berths

But long term, “new money” like Tech and to a lesser degree Miami will just make the P2 game the system. The P2 benefit from the elimination of inducement NIL, with allowed revenue sharing basically tied to conference payouts and the advantages of being a big brand

A couple of clarifications regarding info shared on this pod:

Cody Campbell's wife didn't fund the TT's softball pitcher NIL package. It was the wife of Campbell's business partner, John Sellers, who was a former SB player at TT.

Campbell has publicly acknowledged the Pre-House opportunity to invest in NIL for 2025-26 and also acknowledges that type of one time investment will not occur under House.

And regarding your discussion on the demise of Washington St and Oregon St, Campbell is working Capital Hill to prevent 20-25 more P4 schools (including ISU) from facing similar consequences if the SCORE Act and amending the 1961 Sports Broadcasting Act don't get approved. Campbell is currently at odds with Sankey and Pettiti on this matter as Sankey/ESPN and Pettiti/Fox don't want the SBA amendment to be passed as that means full FBS media rights pooling (which ESPN and Fox obviously don't want). As noted in this Campbell tweet, progress is being made with Sankey. And regarding SCORE/SBA, Campbell is gaining bipartisan support for joint passage of both and the odds of passage are increasing.

Yeah, UCF is highly sensitive to having any continued reference to it as a directional school. If you go to their athletics website, there is little to zero mention of "Central Florida". There is also minimal reference to Central Florida on their main website. Similar deal to TCU as they have minimal mention of Texas Christian University. Adding both UCF and Houston were mistakes by the B12 when adding BYU and Cincy would have been sufficient.

What are the proposed changes to the SCORE/SBA?

Forgive me if I am wary of a billionaire proposing changes to longstanding law.
SCORE Act

Amending the Sports Broadcasting Act of 1961 would give colleges and conferences the same antitrust protections professional sports leagues have. The conferences can then their bundle their football-driven media rights and at least double or even triple what they make now on those television contracts and better fund Olympic and non-rev sports across all of FBS including RevShare.

And Campbell is also advocating rational geographic realignment in conjunction with the SBA Amendment to cut expenses from existing coast to coast conferences and better monetize the pooled rights across all of FBS.

I actually don't understand Williams annoyance with tnis. If they want to rebrand and be called UCF what is the big deal? Insisting on calling them Central Florida for no reason is kinda petty.

Agree, CW seems to be overly insistent/obsessive with calling it Central Florida, like he has been on a mission since UCF joined the league.

Similar to TCU reference, short list of others we could adhere to full name:
California-Los Angeles
Nevada-Las Vegas
Texas-El Paso
Alabama-Birmingham

What does UCF stand for? Does TCU get upset when people call them Texas Christian University? It's a silly thing to get upset about
It’s more silly to get upset with them wanting others to use a particular nickname

Can’t fault them for trying to manage their brand.

It’s like how USC prefers to be called USC rather than Southern Cal. USC is trademarked to the University of Southern California,

Don't forget Southern Methodist.

I assume UCF did what TCU did a few years ago which is their athletic programs have largely switched to only referring to itself as TCU in an effort to rebrand away from the the Christian part of their name. However, I have never met a TCU fan get mad at being called Texas Christian.

TCU is interesting since I went on a campus visit and their Christian affiliate is a small Christian denomination that virtually no one on their campus follows. They are connected to the disciples of Christ which is a theological liberal group that iirc was actually the first Christian denomination to do same sex marriages.

However other schools like LSU and USC also have made an effort to brand by their initials, instead of full name.

The main difference is it only seems like UCF fans get mad about it. If they just ignored it I think people would just use UCF.

Directional school doesn't want to be known as directional school, even though they're still a directional school.

After their "rebrand" many years ago, certain people at UNI would throw absolute fits if you called them "Northern Iowa".

Brigham Young/BYU is probably similar example to SMU/TCU in the religion reference.

I agree some institutions are fine interchanging, one is branding that's partly or mainly for sports and the other largely "academic/historic."

Did not appreciate CW's reference to the "Brock Purdy effect". He should know better.
