Ive just learned to expect this kind of thing after this long as a cyclone fan haha

Agreed. But they allow him to finish the season.

idk. They went 0-9 in conference last year and just lost to a crappy Tulsa team at home. He will not get the whole season unless OSU is poor and DNGAF.

I mean, whats the real benefit of firing early?

The players aren't going to change. Hell, some might just shut it down for the year and jump in the portal if you do it now.

I could see them announcing a "retirement" effective either at the end of the year or late in the year

The OSU AD, Weiberg, did not have his contract extended and suffered a heart attack this year. He is likely gone. May be time to clean house.

OSU had like 40+ transfers this year, so trying to hold on to players is a lost cause.

One of the ironies is that the first article I read about possible replacements did not have a single OSU coach. Not a good sign when you are 20+ years in and you have no coaching tree. Even Golesh was mentioned, but no prior OSU coach.

Maybe they let him finish it out of respect for his 20+ years, but I think they are just digging the hole deeper. Time to use the tourniquet and cut your losses. I would have assumed you know rotten when you see it. :p

Im not saying he shouldn't be gone this year, he should. I'm just saying theres really no benefit to kicking a coach out and running with an interim for the next 2 months.

They may still pull that trigger of course, but I could also see them announcing a retirement or waiting until a bit later in the season to announce it'll be his last season so they can get moving on the next guy and then hitting transfer portal fast.

If they were smart, they should start a negotiated settlement (like Iowa should). "Retire" at the end of the year, get 1/2 your buyout and our accolades. Or be a **** and make us fire you (like Ferentz will insist).

I do not recall, was Fran handled this way or did he get full buyout?

The payout Gundy is owed will dictate when he exits.
