Hey Pollard stop agreeing to these games

How much money does Iowa State make for having a home game?

Perhaps I missed something, but everyone is asking like we would somehow lose money by playing another home game. It just doesn’t make sense to me.

If I’m wrong, explain it to me like I’m 9 years old.
Season ticket prices don’t change with an extra home game, so that means only 10-20k tickets at most would bring in money. Same with parking. Them figure we have to pay 1.25-1.75 million to bring a team in. If you want to avoid a home and home like we did with ark st then you have to buy two games.

1.5MM paid to buy a game spread over 15k tickets is $100/ticket profit needed.

You have to look at it over a 2 year period. Since we did a home and home with Arkansas State, we didn't have to give them any money. But if we paid Arkansas State $1.5-$2 Million last year, and another MAC or Sun Belt the same this year, then we just spent $3-$4 Million over 2 years that we didn't spend doing a home and home.

Now if we do spend the money, we only get 1 more home game every two years, and that additional home game isn't going to offset that $3-$4 Million.

I just wish we would schedule better destinations so our fans have a reason to go. Jonesboro and Bowling Green ain't it. I also wonder if ISU changes their approach once Cy-Town is 100%?

Somewhere a spreadsheet says cost of buying out the opposing team's home game exceeds the additional "profit" generated by having the home game.

I'm guessing they have some analysis that shows if they raised ticket prices by 25% (15% additional game + 10% cost adjustment) they don't come out ahead.

CyTown IN THEORY won't change ISU's perception. They're going to be getting rent if I had to guess and not incremental rent based on revenues from tenants.

Hey we are power 4, Matt hates it, give it up!
I’ve been fighting this for years. Obviously JP is the best AD we’ve ever had, but it doesn’t mean he gets a free pass on this.

The mob will beat you down with Fuzzy Math and toeing the “company line”.

It can be done. The negatives far out weigh the positives. It’s more than just the bottom line. Which if it’s done correctly, you add $$$ for the season tickets and make money on a game.

15k tickets @ $50 is $750k. Plus parking. Plus concessions.

And then you need to consider the possible negative financial consequences of losing to Ohio or Ark St. We are currently #14. We will probably drop after nearly losing in Jonesboro.

If it is me, I vote for playing the two ”cheapest” teams at home plus the Iowa game in the non-con. I don’t care if it is Albany or UMass or Waldorf College. Just play the cheapest teams AT HOME because there is nothing to gain from playing away games against decent competition. Play somebody who is happy to come to Ames and take a paycheck that fits with our financials.

Who should we schedule instead? We already played USD…..
We should be able to play schools like Northwest Missouri State, University of Kearny, Chadron State, Pittsburg State to name a few. Good Gawd....Look at some of the teams the SEC played in non conference games. Also, Bill Snyder seemed to find some pretty weak opponents when he was coaching.

It’s fairly common for other P4 schools. Yeah not every year, and we don’t do it every year either. Other schools get a hell of a lot more money from donors as well, hence why they may not need to do it as often.

I mean, look at some of our peer schools in the big 12 and its not even as common as every other year that we're doing.

And most of the time when other big 12 schools do schedule them its got some other element to it- like Houston and OSU playing in-state and one-time in-conference rivalries. Or they get a deal like a 2 for 1 (like WVU did with Ohio)

Hell, Arkansas State and Bowling green both have future matchups scheduled against big 12 schools TCU and Cincinnati with no return game.

I will spend way more on this Arky State trip than any home game.

Charge full price. We will pay it.

and pay a team

Plain and simple

Also take off the cost for all the workers, the police overtime for traffic control, etc.

I believe the big 12 has a rule that only 1 non FBS can be scheduled, there can be exceptions, like the Drake one, if games get cancelled for one reason or another. Also, these games are scheduled close to a decade out. So you may think they are bad then, but turn it around and are good when you do play.

Someone please email the athletics department because I'm SURE they haven't ever thought of that!

Aren't we one of the smaller budgets in the conference? This is what happens when your budget blows.

Drake was the only non FBS team we played in 2018 as the SD State game got cancelled.

In 2027 we should buy out the bowling Green game and play ....... Kansas State
First good suggestion.

I think this conversation is dumb. JP is our leader and decisions have been made. His direction over the past few decades have put us in position that we can complain about home and home series.

If we found ourselves in position to make a move, this by far makes the most sense.

I don't think 15k GA tickets will get sold at $100 a pop if the sisters of the poor are scheduled for a home game.

SD was the first non conference, non iowa opponent that has sold out.

I trust JP knows how to math. That and dealing with the lag between scheduling against on-the-field success.

No, we aren't. In terms of AD revenue, we are in the top half of the new B12.

Not a horrible idea, but where? Arrowhead? We're 0-4 there
That would probably have to be the place. That was the old cyclones, this is the new cyclones we are talking about just like the old cyclones probably lose today

Can someone give me a real answer: pollard said it saved us money doing this games. How? Is it that substantial vs a home game revenue?
cost of buying two home games against these teams is probably at least $3 mil, then have to know what the price is for a home and home to figure the difference. Is it basically $0 for the home and home? Maybe since the other team gets a big home game out of it. I’m fine with it if it’s a destination like UNLV in Vegas. But Jonesboro on a 110 deg heat index day sucks. Thought I read we were the highest rated team to ever play there. Just glad we got the W and hope Konrardy and Burkle are ok.
