National Anthem

I would like to issue an apology to all posters and mods in this thread. I injected politics here and I shouldn't have. I thought this thread was in the cave and I failed to make sure before I posted here.

Again, my sincerest of apologies. It won't happen again. I served a suspension for it (rightfully so) and am glad to be back!!

I vote for a ban.

I'm all for the anthem during international competition involving legit national teams competing and the Olympics (not NHL, NBA, MLB, etc games), but I would be fine without it before regular games involving two American teams. Otherwise why not play it before movies or concerts or peewee games, etc?

Don't tempt it.

I missed it but it's cool that BTM did it.

This! I've heard some solo singers really, really butcher it!
I generally enjoy it as kind of a formal introduction to the event. I don't know how it got connected to sporting events though, and I guess I don't know that it would be some huge loss if it ended.

It's at it's best at college football games when the band is playing it.

Couple of things:

- It’s kind of weird that the national anthem, of all things, is traditionally performed before sporting events. Yeah, international competitions, okay fine, but a June baseball game between the Rangers and the White Sox?

- That said, it’s fine, it’s tradition, I’ll stand and take off my hat and show respect for my country.

- What I refuse to do, though, is show the same respect for God Bless America when baseball teams insist on playing that on Sundays. Nope, not the national anthem, just a song linking a specific religion to our country, even if the PA guy says “please stand and remove your hats,” nope, not complying with that. I’ll be quiet and respectful, but that’s not a nationally inclusive song by any measure.

- Back when local radio stations still carried high school sports, there was one guy who would always purposely have a commercial break right when the home team’s band was playing the national anthem. I was doing games on another station, and I’d just let the anthem go out over the air as I shut up, but I had to respect him for his consistency in getting a break in right on top of the anthem (it was Brent Balbinot, who used to do high school games in Cedar Rapids/Iowa City, but last I knew had moved up to be the radio voice of the Toledo Rockets).

EDIT: I guess Balbinot was fired by Learfield from his Toledo job in 2022. Right during basketball season, so that was unusual. Looks like he works for a media outlet in Defiance, Ohio now.

Would you be upset if the national anthem was no longer played at sporting events? I've heard a lot of people say they wish performers would just get it overwith to get to the games. What's your thoughts?
Other than after winning international competitions (Olympics, etc), I've never really understood why people cling to it at sporting events...particularly when all the teams/participants are from our country.
But hey, that's just me.

I agree with the band sentiment. Too many performers try to make it their own by stylized vocals. I prefer a straightforward band performance to much of the caterwauling that goes on in the name of "performing" it.

I would agree with this regardless of political and/or religious beliefs. Trying to force people to stand for anything that isn't the national anthem isn't right and shouldn't be expected.
